Objectives

This project’s main activity is an International Youth Exchange (IYE). Under the theme “Care and share for our community - Malými zmenami vieme dosiahnuť veľké veci” (With small changes we can achieve big things) it gives 60 young people with disadvantaged backgrounds from 8 European countries (PT, UK, SI, SK, ES, DE, IT, HU) the opportunity to come together, learn and share for 2 weeks in Slovakia. The IYE aims to explore different dimensions of environmental issues and how closely these topics and the commitment for them are interlinked with (young people’s) education for active citizenship and universal Human Rights (HR). It will support and encourage young people living in deprived city areas to become active and co-create a future in a clean environment, starting in their own community, at their own doorsteps! Participants will gain knowledge and insights into causes and effects of environmental problems and understand how we are all contributing as consumers. We will develop ideas and tools to take care for our communities and the environment as active young citizens, to reduce our ecological footprint and to make changes in our daily lives. Participative actions tried out during the IYE will be brought back into young people’s communities to be carried on, in order to spread our experiences and reach small changes all over Europe. This IYE will consider the political dimension of environmental issues in general, but we will especially focus on “our” young people’s politically forgotten and neglected communities, where marginalised groups like Roma and refugee young people live. It will draw political attention towards those communities, contributing to young people’s awareness that their role as European active citizens goes beyond the right to vote; that they are not only passive consumers in a democracy. It will give them the possibility to learn more about their universal HR and many reasons to defend them, discover their potential to actively take steps to raise their voices and develop their communities according to their needs. The IYE will initiate and enhance young people's democratic involvement in their civil societies. It will be an essential lesson for their awareness as (European!) citizens and for their HR education as a whole. The project also aims to support local and European youth work partners to discover and develop their potentials as important stakeholders and multipliers for HR education and environmental issues - especially when working in disadvantaged areas that are often deprived of those HR and where the access to these topics is repeatedly obstructed.
