Objectives

Games have always played a role in connecting different peoples and enabled shared communication and mutual understanding. With games it is possible to deal with topics and to question them. In most cases they require the compliance with rules, whereby the same game can sometimes consist of different rules in different countries. Nonetheless games are also played beyond national borders. The European Union functions in a similar way. Politicians bring their national rules (of the game) about a certain topic to the table and create uniform rules for the whole EU. This system can be considered in a positive as well as negative light, but in any case, it is worthwhile to deal with different topics that present future challenges for Europe and its people, such as solidarity in the EU, codetermination, climate change and environmental pollution, nutrition, youth unemployment, retirement provision, protection of borders, multiculturality and handling social media. For our target group however, this must be done in a format that motivates young people and encourages their participation, without organisers acting as “moralizers”. Therefore, we would like to collaborate with youth workers, who primarily work with disadvantaged youths, and experienced pedagogues of play to counteract the anti-European mood in many EU countries in the year of the European elections. The objective of the collaboration is to jointly develop games that carry the “European idea” of a union of nations and deal with the challenges that the EU is going to face in the coming years.
