Objectives

impact:play focuses on implementing game mechanics and narratives into social structures and as methods in youth work. The motivation to organise the seminar is driven by several factors. We as groups and people involved in impact:play observe the current discussion in Europe on how to deal with populism and extremism. We have all already worked together as organisations on confronting those issues and want to improve our collaboration. In context of the current trend of exploration and exploitation of play and gamification, our approach is to bring game mechanics into youth work, yet without the spirit of competition and rewards. The Game Parlour as the receiving organisation has long years of experience with creating and using games for different social situations. We believe that games help us to get a fundamentally different perspective towards the world, society and rules: We perceive them as made, as programmed, and thus, as reprogrammable. Gamers are used to connecting to strangers, collaborating with them over distances impossible to think of in the so-called "real-life". Gamers' groups of friends, their “guilds”, are transnational, their digital culture surpasses religions and languages, and identities change with every game played. We believe that games and game mechanics are the ideal means to help young people enhance key competences for their personal development: Playing gives the chance to try out behaviour and to test reactions. A game opens up a new world and thus the the opportunity to try out living someone else's live. This helps building up tolerance and an understanding of strangers as well as neighbours with different ways of living their lives. With impact:play we want to focus on how techniques and dispositives from the digital world can help to make the analogue one more worthy to live in. The idea behind impact:play is to share successful practices among youth workers interested in the field of gaming and also to debate, discuss and develop further methods according to the specific needs of each country. The objective is to elaborate and further spread the work with game mechanics, the narratives and transgressive identities of digital games in youth work.
