Objectives

More and better permaculture teachers - through exposure to some of the best permaculture places and teachers in Europe at high level courses. There are classic and internationally standardized permaculture courses, e.g. PDC (Permaculture Design Certificat) and forest gardening courses and a large number of other permaculture related topics as well as teacher trainings. We wanted the teachers to be further trained and gain more competences within design tools and processes, didactic skills and practical areas. The goal was also to make the diploma program stronger, which is a minimum of two years of self-study and 10 designs in a portfolio as a result. You can start the diploma once you have taken a PDC. Around 10% want to continue with the diploma after the PDC, so an appropriate number of PDCs should be held each year in order to create a critical mass who would like to continue with the diploma program and create the basis for a strong community of practice.

Background

Permakultur Denmark (PKDK) has the overall responsibility for the development of permaculture education in Denmark and to vouch for a desired quality. It is part of PKDK's business plan and purpose to support the teaching, dissemination and practice of permaculture. PKDK's flagship project is the LAND network, where there are around 10 LAND centers that demonstrate permaculture in the best way with holistic approach to livelihoods and ecosystems. LAND stands for Learning, Activity, Network and Demonstration and is our primary learning platform. It is these LAND centers that handle the majority of teaching in permaculture in Denmark. Each LAND center has at least one person who is registered by PKDK as a teacher and the LAND centres functions as our distributed classrooms. Diploma in applied permaculture is the next step on the learning pathway after the PDC and capacity building was needed so that both diploma mentors and diploma aspirants could get a boost, especially through gaining more knowledge about the English diploma system and taking part in their network. In addition, we are also happy to support permaculturists with other learning platforms, e.g. colleges and eco-villages.
