Objectives

In the last 20 years, populist parties have more than tripled their support in Europe, securing enough votes to put their leaders into government posts in 11 countries and challenging the established political order across the continent. According to Fiona Mackie, the author of the Democracy Index 2018 report, the expansion of populism is one of the reasons for the declining democratic quality of Europe. Populists in power often subvert democratic norms, whether by undermining the media and judiciary or by trampling minority rights. Some of the most significant political developments in the recent years- like the Brexit referendum and the election of Donald Trump – could not be understood without taking into account the rise of populism. Therefore, the Danish-Romanian Association found it essential to support the exchange of knowledge and practices between the youth workers of Programme and Partner countries upon how to promote democracy and fight populism. Through the project, they aimed to deepen youth workers’ understanding on present day political trends and enable them to support young people in forming their political identity. The project aim was to promote democracy and increase youth workers competences upon supporting young people in their political identity formation. The objectives of the project were: • To make youth workers reflect upon the benefits of democracy • To give and exchange best practices between the partners upon promoting democracy among young people • To deepen youth workers understanding upon populism and its tools • To provide youth workers tools to be able to detect and respond to populism • To give the opportunity to youth workers to develop non-formal education methods in order to promote democracy and fight populism among young people During the training course, the youth workers gained invaluable skills in providing guidance to young people in the formation of their political attitude and view. The project created a deeper understanding upon the perception of the populist trends in today’s world and inspired youth workers to promote democracy. What is more, the project helped improve the level of key competences and skills of youth workers relating to their professional work through broadening their understanding of practises and methods. During the training course, the participants had the chance to develop non-formal education methods in mixed national groups, which enriched their youth work practice with new methods that resonate with the current issues, which young people are faced with. The project also aimed at improving the quality of the organizations’ work by enhancing youth workers capacity to support young people. The youth workers professional improvement contributes to the transfer of the common fundamental values (such as freedom, democracy, the rule of law, pluralism and justice) to the hard-to-reach young people and helps to prevent violent radicalisation of young people. Finally, the project enhanced cooperation in the youth sector between Programme and Partner countries by involving 9 partners from EU and Eastern Partnership Countries.
