Objectives

This project is aiming at two groups of young people who have grown up in neighborhoods where organized crime is prominent in Palermo and Copenhagen respectively. Both groups have chosen to engage in voluntary projects aimed at changing their local area. With this project we want: • To strengthen the self-reflection of the volunteers by giving them an international example to mirror themselves in. By experiencing other young people who are different from themselves, but with similar problems and experiences, the young people are better able to recognize problems in their own daily life, which they otherwise perceive as just given. By discussing the subject with strangers, young people can better see how growing up with criminals has influenced their societal view and perception of normality. • To increase the youths reflection on the social issues in their local area and thus increase their ability to convey them as guides and their capabilities to change their communities through local projects. • Increase the capacity of the participants to improve their communities by their communicative projects by strengthening them professionally as guides. • To raise the awareness of the participants of the fact that they are engaged in active citizenship and make them discuss their concrete activities in the light of community engagement. In doing so, we want to open the minds of the young people to engage in other forms of political or social work. Particularly the Danish group consisting of socially disadvantaged minority youth do not see themselves as part of society and have great reservations towards political involvement in Denmark. • To increase the participant's international outlook by presenting them to young people from another European country who are different from them but still know the same problems.
