Objectives

The main aims of the project were: - learn from a school with a well-functioning mentorship system, so as to improve the mentorship system of Viimsi Gymnasium; - enhance our teachers’ knowledge and skills regarding coaching/mentorship by job shadowing and training opportunities, and thereby improve our set of guidelines for mentors; - provide training courses and job shadowing opportunities for a substantial number of school personnel, who, in their turn, would impact their colleagues and the school as a whole, by setting an example and implementing new practices in their everyday job; - find new cooperation partners worldwide.

Background

Viimsi Gymnasium was opened in 2018. Our mission is to create a school of the future where the emphasis is on developing self-reliant, self- directed learners and on supporting each student’s individual and social development. One of the way how to achieve this is through mentoring which is our unique value as a school. We started developing the mentorship system, which is also the main objective of the current project, in March 2018. During the first schoolyear we reached our first bottlenecks, which is also the main reason for writing the current project. As the mentorship system is quite a new phenomenon in Estonia and our time testing and developing it has not been long, teachers need a good example and useful guidelines and methods to demonstrate how each individual student can benefit from the mentorship system. In addition as being a new school at that time there were no international partners nor we had done international projects in this organisations which was also the strive for us to apply for Erasmus+ project.
