Objectives

Our long term objectives in pursuing this project were: 1. Professional development of the staff 2. International character of the school 3 .Educational and professional development of our teachers in an international environment. 4. Development of foreign language skills (English) with a view to participating in European projects in the future. 5. Acquiring experience in transnational collaborations so that we could initiate and materialize European programmes. 6 .Networking of teachers with other colleagues from European schools so that they can exchange ideas, good practices and educational material. 7. Promoting the European dimension in school education for the creation of the European citizen identity through knowledge and understanding of other cultures. More specifically for the teachers participating in the CLIL seminar: development of communicative skills in the English language and formation of class vocabulary within a CLIL context. Application of the CLIL approach and exploration of the method’s potential through practical ideas for class management, lesson plans and production of teaching materials. For those participating in “Activate your English” seminar: Development of language skills levels B1-B2 (oral, vocabulary, pronunciation) as a means of classroom communication and management of everyday situations. Also as a possibility to teach part of the curriculum in English and participate in more Erasmus+ projects.

Background

The 9th Primary school of Mytilini is one of the biggest schools on Lesvos island and among its students refugee and immigrant children are to be found. This context has created the need for our teachers to be able to function in a multilingual environment to face up to the challenges posed in a professional, ethical and humane level. Our previous experience gained through participation in student exchange Erasmus + programmes has already brought us into contact with the European Education community and has also created the need to further educate and bring our staff up to date with the evolutionary educational process.
