Objectives

The objectives of the plan, which were inextricably linked to the needs of the school unit, were the following: I. the training of teachers in intercultural communication, in order to be able to manage and utilize the student heterogeneity and the diverse identity of our refugee students II. familiarizing teachers with innovative, best practices and implementing effective strategies for differentiated teaching III. raising teachers' awareness of new methods, teaching techniques (e.g. six hats thinking technique, Jigsaw method, etc.) and improving teaching skills that promote tolerance and inclusion of foreign students (immigrants and refugees) IV. individual support - psychological and pedagogical - for minority, migrant and refugee children and resolution of conflicts among students.

Background

The composition of the student population of the 9th Primary School of Intercultural Education in Ioannina presented a strong linguistic and cultural diversity, as a result of the war and the huge refugee influx, which enriched the multicultural character of the school and brought about difficulties in the daily interaction of the members of the school community, both in terms of the development of social relations and in the learning process. The members of the Teachers' Association expressed the need for training in identity management issues, in order to strengthen the school culture and develop professionally, turning the heterogeneity of the student population into an asset. Initially, the main needs of the organization, which were related to the creative management of the diverse identity of refugee students and the training of teachers in intercultural communication skills, were defined, and, subsequently, the main areas of improvement focused on familiarisation with innovative teaching "tools", techniques to address xenophobic and stereotypical perceptions, the design of innovative projects, intercultural competence and deep empathy.
