New innovative curricula/educational methods/development of training coursesKey Competences (incl. mathematics and literacy) - basic skillsEarly School Leaving / combating failure in education

Objectives

Our objectives were: 1. To know new methods of teaching Spanish which will improve the linguistic competence in Spanish, referred to all of our students in our school, with a special emphasis in students with migrant origin (Chinese and Moroccan origin) who come to school with great gaps in Spanish language. 2. To improve teaching practice in STEM subjects. Mathematics is one of the main subjects in our students’ education where great gaps have been detected. They affect processes related to other subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Technology. 3. From IES Tirso de Molina, we believe that Spanish education reality still uses traditional teaching and learning methods which do not develop all students’ competences. Knowing new education methodologies is a key action in order to improve teaching quality and adapt it to a student centred methodology. 4. To improve discipline and academic results, which is related to the inclusion of migrant students in our society and educational system, by getting to know plans to assist migrant communities.

Background

IES Tirso de Molina is a Secondary Education School in Puente de Vallecas, Madrid. Lessons are taught morning and evening. There are 79 teachers in our school. The main features of the district where our school is located are: - high percentage of immigrants - high rate of unemployment and conflict - highest percentage of receivers of Minimum Insertion Income - second poorest district in Madrid – high rate of school dropout and early school leaving. Our students’ families are working class, with a medium or low-medium cultural level and a high percentage of immigrant students. Due to the school environment, many students come from deprived social situations and require specific educational support to avoid school failure and early leaving, that is why it is considered difficult performance. The school needs global and specific programmes which help avoid these shortages and provide the same opportunities to disadvantaged students in our educational system. The objective is to reduce school failure and early school leaving, by developing a program to improve education quality and learning process.
