Project summary

The Arduino SYS-STEM for Schools Methodology is a package of specific materials and projects for students aged 14-18 in Arduino that includes a structured step-by-step programme in electronics and programming development using Arduino. Each Module includes all the necessary didactic planning tools and guidelines: learning outcomes that will be achieved, complete sets of materials and examples, simulations, sample exercises in Arduino for students, and solutions. The SYS-STEM project partners have created 4 remote Arduino Laboratories (ArdLABs) not only for their students but for students from anywhere in the world. These laboratories allow remote access and a variety of STEM experiments without the need of having Arduino equipment available. Schools, Teachers and Students are invited to join-in and use these ArdLABs through the ArdLAB Hub. For those schools, universities or organisations wishing to develop their own Arduino Labs and make them available to the world (should they wish to share their facilities with other schools and students), SYS-STEM partners have additionally developed an ArdLAB starter Guide to facilitate the process of development and registration of potential additional remote labs to the ArdLAB HUB.

Objectives

-Greater awareness in STEM subjects. -Improvements in the Quality of secondary education and future professionals. -Enhanced employability. - provide educators at school level with OPEN ACCESS to the best electronics arduino pedagogy, materials and facilities - support general education schools and technology teachers establish their own ArdLAB should they have the means to do so - through use of any of the SYS-STEM outputs, support educators enthuse and inspire general education school students about electronics and cause them to positively consider STEM occupations - prepare young people for the growing opportunities in electronics in the future labour market -The creation of synergies between different secondary education schools, not only the one created with the partners working in the project, but also with teacher that belong to other schools. -Support to STEM teachers. We offer them ready to use didactical material with practical exercices and the possibility to access real Arduino laboratories. With the workshops offered to teachers we have trained and upskilled secondary school teachers.

Background

The ARDUINO SYS-STEM for SCHOOLS project aims to attract more secondary school students (aged 14-18) into STEM related subjects and future careers by offering attractive, practical learning materials and projects for programming at the right level and wider access to arduino materials and technology. At present, in the EU there is a lack of well trained technical workers and SYS-STEM will help raising the interest in STEM related carees. The project specifically aimes to support teachers and students by creating ready to use attractive didactical materials in arduino including guidelines for establishing an ArdLAB should a school have the means to do so. In either case future users (schools and teachers anywhere) can enjoy the practical possibilities of a well equipped ArdLAB. Many secondary institutions who do not have trained electronics teachers or quality Arduino Labs. Integrating this technology into the curriculum is an opportunity to spread Electronics (STEM) in schools and encourage more young people to become involved in careers in electronics, automation and technology.
