Background

The Roma community, over 10 million of people, is Europe’s largest transnational minority structurally victim of racial and social discrimination without equal access to education, housing and welfare. The gap in education between Roma and non-Roma children remains high (FRA). The use of discriminatory narratives by politicians and the media has serious consequences in shaping offline and online social relations: digital communication allows the imaginary of being unreachable feeling no empathy while the distance contributes to dehumanize the victims. The development of social networks has increased the level of youth participation by allowing peer relationships and developing new knowledges. These opportunities represent positive challenges but also threats for young people who may be victims or perpetrators of human rights violations. An informed use of the media represents a strong and urgent need especially in the age range of 11-14 years, when the first contact with social networks occurs. Also, parents and teachers often don’t have the appropriate preparation to cope with the phenomenon of discrimination offline and online, and they need to acquire more tools and skills to recognize and tackle such processes.
