Project summary

There is a clear need within the arts sector, and more specifically within the music sector, to learn how to be self-employed in order to survive within the music industry. New Skills 4 New Artists (NS4NA) directly addresses this key need, providing young artists with a series of professional qualifications that are crucial to the success of their self-employment or entrepreneurial projects. The pilot training programme, developed in 2 phases, has allowed to deepen the needs of these new professional profiles, with the aim of providing them with the right tools for their success. The project, therefore, addresses new fundamental changes in the training of musicians, equipping them with a series of non-artistic skills necessary to succeed in in the modern musical environment. NS4NA aimed to address a clear lack of digital, communication and business skills in artists and, in particular, to provide training in business development, digital marketing and online distribution of music, with a focus on the most vulnerable groups of musicians: musicians who are unemployed and/or at the beginning of their professional careers. In accordance with the needs identified for the sector discussed in the previous section, the overall objectives of the project were: - To connect artists with current tools, opportunities and challenges. - To design and test an interdisciplinary training programme that would connect young music professionals (whose training outside the artistic field is often non-existent) with the business, marketing and entrepreneurial skills needed to pursue their careers. - To create and lay the foundations for a sustainable lifelong learning programme, ready to be transferred and integrated into training institutions in Europe. All the activities foreseen in the application form have been implemented satisfactorily, except for the need to adapt the format of the pilot courses due to the health crisis. Specifically, the following activities have been developed: - Research and benchmarking: study of the digital solutions and tools that will subsequently be included in the training modules. - Design of the pilot training programme. - Design and launch of the call for the selection of participants. - Implementation of the training programme in two rounds: the first was carried out online due to the health situation as mentioned above, while in the second phase it has been possible to carry it out in a hybrid way. - Dissemination of the actions carried out and preparation of the training guidelines document, which covers all the necessary aspects for the replication of the training programme on a European scale and provides practical advice drawn from the pilot experience developed in the framework of the NS4NA project. - Three multiplier events: in Ireland, Spain and Belgium. - Two face-to-face transnational meetings: kick-off meeting in Madrid and closing meeting in Brussels. The results of the project are linked to the activities developed in the previous point: - Benchmark document both of potentially usable technologies and of other similar courses that could be used as a reference. This document has been useful for the design and development of the training programme. - Pilot training programme: it was drawn up taking into account the lessons learned from the benchmark and consisted of three modules: introduction to entrepreneurship, introduction to technology and digital marketing and communication. - Implementation of the pilot training programme: as mentioned above, the pilot test was carried out in two rounds. The first round took place online, given the healthcare situation, while the second round combined online and face-to-face classes in a hybrid format. - Production of a guidelines document: this document compiles all aspects necessary for the replication of the course by other organisations. It therefore provides both the teaching materials used and other practical advice obtained as a result of the two pilot rounds (guidelines and supporting material attached in annexes).
