Project summary

The EU promotes the active inclusion and full participation of people with disabilities in society, in line with the EU's approach to human rights for disability, this means that disability is a problem of rights and not an issue of discretion. This approach is also the core of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), to which the Through cultural life and the arts, people and their communities express their specific identity and the meaning they give to their existence and configure a vision of the world that represents their encounter with the external forces that affect their lives. The right to participate fully in cultural life has three dimensions interrelated with the priority actions mentioned above, and that also reinforce each other: - Access, by which people are given the opportunity to experience cultural and artistic life and to acquire knowledge about a broad spectrum of different forms of expression. - Participation, which requires that concrete, individual or collective opportunities be offered, to express oneself freely, communicate, act and participate in creative activities, with a view to achieving the full development of the personality. - The contribution to cultural life, which includes the right to contribute to the spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional expressions of culture and the arts, thus promoting the development and transformation of the society to which it belongs. To achieve the participation of people with disabilities as generators and consumers of culture it is required the development of a focused approach on them, to encourage their creations and expose them, and to make them participate also in the structure and programs offered. With the Artability+ project, precisely that was the objective, the achievement of the participation of people with disabilities as generators and consumers of culture, starting from the dimensions. To achieve this goal, we designed and developed a training curriculum focused on the teaching/learning of artistic techniques and including the introduction of cross-cutting content focused on promoting the autonomy of people with disabilities, in which the adult person with disabilities was both student and teacher of their peers. Through the experimentation of this, it was also intended to achieve the transition of the participation of people with disabilities from specific environments to normalized environments. Thus, over the three years of the project, we have developed a training curriculum as an intellectual product, along with several annexes useful for daily practice. The curriculum designed focuses on promoting the personal autonomy of adults with disabilities through teaching and learning artistic techniques. Adults with disabilities have been involved in the whole process, acting also as trainers of their peers. This has been made possible by developing the curriculum while a group of adults with disabilities were putting it into practice in the pilot project. In addition, the curriculum was completed with the following annexes, which can be used together with the curriculum or independently: - Support products made with 3D printer - How to prepare an exhibition - How to guide an exhibition - Methodological guide As a result, in addition to the experimental part, we have also created a downloadable APP for Android mobile devices, where you can see the virtual exhibition designed by our students. This exhibition includes a sample of some of the works created by themselves with some of the techniques learned. The curriculum and the rest of the material are published under an open license and can be downloaded for free through the project website www.artabilityplus.eu. They are available in the following languages: English, Spanish, Lithuanian, Greek, Romanian and Galician. It should be noted that the section of the project website dedicated to artistic techniques also includes the didactic material developed, which is none other than the videos made by the adults with disabilities participating in the experimental part of the project. The aim of these videos was to train other people, and they have been used as training tools by all the project partners. A document with an analysis of good practices in the field of art and disability can also be found on the website.

Background

Through cultural life and the arts, individuals and their communities express their identity and shape their worldview. The right to participate fully in cultural life has three interrelated and mutually reinforcing dimensions: Access, which provides people with the opportunity to experience cultural and artistic life and to acquire knowledge about a variety of forms of expression; Participation, which requires the provision of concrete opportunities to express themselves freely, communicate, act and participate in creative activities, in order to achieve the full development of their personality; Contribution to cultural life, thus promoting the development and transformation of the society to which they belong. To achieve the participation of people with disabilities as generators and consumers of culture requires the development of an approach focused on them, which encourages their creations and exposes them. Artability+ offers a training opportunity to adults with disabilities to improve their social participation/inclusion through the generation/creation of artistic expressions and the consumption of culture in the community.
