Project summary

The 'WE ARE WHAT YOU EAT' project aims to make our students aware of the importance of leading a healthy life through activities related to food, sport and gastronomic traditions in each country. Changes in society have caused a major variation in the diet that is quite far from the traditional and healthy "Mediterranean diet". There have also been major changes in the habits of children and young people. The use of new technologies leading to a decrease in dedication to the sport and physical activity and an increase in sedentary lifestyles. This variation in traditional diet and physical activity is placing OBESITY as one of the serious problems of Europe. The project offers as a model of a healthy diet the MEDITERRANEAN DIET, internationally accepted for its many benefits. We also want to provide students with more needs, the resources to know all these benefits and integrate them into their daily lives. We understand that the health of the citizens of a country is the priority objective of any society that cares about their well-being and happiness. Schools have an obligation to collaborate in this task. Our objectives are mainly to raise awareness and educate all students, about the benefits of conscious consumption and about the serious problems of the abuse of certain foods and sedentary lifestyles, and to give value to the history, culture and traditions of the European countries through the knowledge of their reality, so that our students acquire European values. We also want to favour the inclusion of students who suffer the consequences of the lack of resources in the families, the lack of information and knowledge about health. At the end of the project we hope to achieve the creation of healthy habits through basic knowledge about the influence of diet and physical exercise on health. The Main participants are students from 6th Primary (11-12 years old), students of 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of ESO (12-15 years old). Primary school teachers: sixth-grade tutor, Natural Science teacher, Physical Education teacher, English teacher. Secondary school teachers: tutor of 1st, 2nd and 3rd of ESO, Natural Sciences and Biology teachers, English teacher. The Secondary participants are the City Hall, stores and supermarkets near the Education Centre, parents, Health Medical Center, other year students, Catholic University of Valencia. Some of the planned activities are: A project entitled "THE DANGERS OF SUGAR" will be a cooperative work and will be included at an eTwinning project. Students will investigate in the supermarkets, products that contain refined sugar and due to their characteristics should not have it. They will have to carry out an advertising poster. Part of the students will prepare traditional recipes others will carry out a study of the traditional games and sports of the participating countries and will create a mural through the PADLET application. 15-year-old students will study the nutritional characteristics of foods and will elaborate on a food wheel and a healthy diet programme. Activities during mobility will be active and will use a cooperative methodology. They will include welcoming acts, ice-breaking activities, school tours, cultural visits, work with kahoot, TV program, menus with typical dishes, activities to conclude and assessment and farewell parties. The activities during the mobilities will be gathered into our eTwinning projects, and moreover will contribute to future developments. The benefits the project are to improve the students’ skills in the sphere of cooperation, terms and conditions for training a healthy life, social relations, English language, use of new technologies. We expect all students to improve their communication in a foreign language, develop skills for searching and selecting information and assistance for the creation of a certain product. Students will become well acquainted with the history, culture and way of life of others through team work, developing and presenting a work in order active European partnership to be created and all stereotypes to be shattered. We expect the established relations will have a lasting effect on the exchange of educational materials, ideas and resources. The results can be useful well beyond this mobility. The school and local communities will also make use of the contact with all partners, this is of extreme importance especially for small partner communities which take part in this project. We will use the website and Facebook page to spread out in detail the results of the project; students will organize seminars and small performances for their families so they can have a clear idea about the European dimension of education. Local municipalities will also be included in these activities.
