Project summary

"From the War to the Peace- Discovering our common historical and cultural Heritage" is a two years project. It refers to two different wars: the Spanish Civil War and the II World War, which despite being clearly different, linked two Mediterranean countries: Spain and Italy. Teachers of both countries want to work together to transmit a peace message to pupils. It has been though as a way to introduce the "Flipped Classroom" pedagogy, empowering students as creators and researchers of their own knowlege at the same time as they are discovering and experiencing their common past. Students can learn from the horror and suffering of soldiers and civil people, who still live (the last veterans and survivors), they can learn to avoid the mistakes of their ancerstors. The project will be concretized in a final tangible result: a guide travel "From the War to the Peace" including three augmented reality maps placing the most important sites and events that happenend at that time in each school region. A part of this, all ceremonies, meetings with academic authorities or testimonies will be up loaded on the project web: photos, videos, literary writings or drawings created by students, some of them will form part of an exhibition during the last learning activity in Sant Adrià del Besós. Obviously, to achieve this goal it is necessary to generate a learning environment which facilitates a real, productive and effective knowledge community, supervised by teachers, where families are integrated too. During this process studentswill develop the following values, keys skills and competences: PERSONAL AND SOCIAL VALUES: -Awareness of the European Citizenship, understanding more how the European Union has been created, as a response to the cruel consequences of the II World War. -The importance of building peace and negotiation to avoid the absurd suffering caused by wars. -Developing solidarity with refugees, who are fleeing from the war nowadays. KEY SKILLS AND COMPETENCES IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND TECHNOLOGY: -Improving English language, because English is the project language among students and to create products. -Improvement of technological skills: E-twining platform and Skype to prepare activities together, Moodle platform to learn or do activities for students of long-term stage. PERSONAL AND SOCIAL KEY SKILLS AND COMPETENCES: -Engagement and collaboration, working in team. -Creativity efficenciency and problem solving: strategies of research, managing information... -Critical thinking, personal growth and well being: they gain self-confidence and assertiveness developing other social skills like empathy and flexibility in unexpected situations. -Consequently, students are learning to learn. All activities are managed by students, according to the point of wiev that teachers are facilitators and students active individuals, who create knowledge. There are planned three short term presencial workshops: a-Following the Italian Memory of the Spanish Civil War and the II World War in Mallorca. b-Following the II World War in Cassino. c-Following the Memory of the Spanish Civil War in Catalonia. The long term stage has a determinated goal: Italians and Spanish students together have to structure all collected information, bacilitated by their mates to create three augmented reality maps describing historical events using different technological tools as apps and digital digital platforms. All these activities need a good online interaction and most of them are though as combined activities. For this reason we plan to use E-Twining and/or Skype and Moodle. However, to solve quickly immediat questions or doubts wil use a Whatsapp group. The main actors of this project are pupils from 13 to 17 years, because despite only few students travel, all students participate in one way or another, either interviewing a researcher or summarizing an spech or exchanging opinions online with peers. The students who participate in international workshops or long-term activites are choosen following criteria of good marks and attitude. However the project benefiet more or less 600 students directly and indirectly all students of partners schools and more, because whoever can visit the website or the final exhibition "From the War to Peace" , showing students' pictures, draws or writings about their experience. It is planned a continous dissemination during the two years. The project will be based in a knowledge community, that collaborate in some open activities, where students, teachers and families can discuss and interacting. It appears as a non-formal interdisciplinary pedagogical tool wich offers an opportunity of recovering and reflection together on our common European historical and social heritage, building peace.

Final report summary

The project was interrupted by the global pandemic caused by Covid-19 when short-term mobility had already been carried out in Mallorca. The other two short-term mobilities were pending in Cassino, Italy, and in Sant Adrià del Besòs, Barcelona; as well as long-term mobility. As soon as the Erasmus activities could be resumed, the short-term mobility was carried out, but the long-term mobility was definitively suspended. Because the families did not consider it appropriate for their children to share accommodation in other people's homes for a period of two months. Let us remember that Italy was in the middle of the sixth wave. For this reason the project had to be modified. The modification of the project has been minimal and an attempt has been made to respect the original project as much as possible, but the activities related to long-term mobility have not been carried out. Like the travel guide “From War to Peace” that included three augmented reality maps where the most important places and events that happened at that historical moment in each school region had to be located. The following activity was added: the 2nd year Bachelor students participated in an online literary day with the Cassino school (Giornata della Nomination per la XV edizione del Premio internazionale citta di Cassino de la Literatura del Fronte, Monday 12 April 2021). Summary of the activities carried out in short-term mobility in Mallorca: First contact with personal introductions and visit to the reception center: IES Joan Maria Thomàs. Audiovisual presentations of the different participating delegations. Guided tour of local institutions: Palma City Council and Parliament of the Balearic Islands. Visit of places directly related to the historical facts of study. Such as Manacor, Porto Cristo, Punta de n'Amer, Sa Coma... Key places in the relationship between Spain and Italy in the Second World War. Lecture by Mrs. María Antonia Oliver, president of the Association for the Historical Memory of Mallorca. Conference by Mr. Mario Cappa, crew member of one of the war frigates that went from Italy to Menorca. Summary of activities carried out in short-term mobility in Italy: Meeting with the authorities of Cassino, surviving veterans of the Second World War and historical memory associations. Visit of places directly related to the historical facts of study. Such as The Abbey of Monte Cassino, the Polish Cemetery and Memorial, the Allied Cemetery and Memorial and the Cassino World War II History Museum. Audiovisual presentation of the different delegations about their respective cities of origin and schools. Contest to choose the logo that would represent the project. Of the three valued proposals: the Mallorcan, the Catalan and the Italian. The logo proposal made by the Italian delegation was chosen by majority. Summary of the activities carried out in short-term mobility in Barcelona: Meeting with the authorities of Sant Adrià del Besòs and with the students who participated, before the pandemic, in the first short-term mobility in Mallorca. Visit of places directly related to the historical facts of study. Such as the Turó de la Rovira, an anti-aircraft battery during the Spanish Civil War, and the Parliament of Catalonia, an institution that was especially persecuted and repressed during the Spanish Civil War and later during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. Heterogeneous analysis working groups on issues common to all wars (before, during and after armed conflicts). Works that were described in an audiovisual way with presentations and recordings. Audiovisual presentation of the conclusions of the work groups described above. Participation in a group lip-up of the entire Sant Grabriel school. Activity that greatly favored group cohesion.
