Objectives

According to the "European Strategy on Disability 2010-2020", "more than half of Europeans consider that discrimination by disability or age is widespread in the EU", so we want to improve this situation through a project which aims to favor all people who suffer this discrimination simply because they have some kind of disability. The idea that we want to transmit is the importance of sensory languages in society. The project " The Power of Sensory Language: HELPing DISabled People” is a Youth Project in favor of social inclusion that foresees the realization of an exchange in Madrid with a total of 36 participants between 18 and 30 years, from different European countries (Italy, Greece, Romania, Spain, Lithuania and France) that will meet to participate together in 5 days of activities, from September 16th to September 21st of 2019, focusing on the subject of communication and language in all its forms. For each partner, of the 7 participants there will be 3 with mental disabilities, 3 without disabilities and a group leader with no age limits. In addition, an accompanying person will come from each country and will help the disabled participants. We know that not everyone has the capacity to express themselves in the same way, and sometimes they are forced to use a certain language that belongs to the typology of language defined as "non-verbal" like, for example, those people who present some disabilities because they can’t be able to see, hear or speak. Another type of language would be verbal like oral, written or iconic language, among others. Also, another type of language is the one referred to new technologies, which currently assumes a leading role in everyday life because we constantly interact with tools such as mobile phones, computers, tablets, etc... Our project will promote and disseminate a universal language, which can be understood by all, the language of the senses, which will help participants to understand all the diversities and to overcome the barriers of discrimination. One of the main objectives is to help young people to search for future employment, expanding their knowledge, developing a broader vision of what European Identity means to promote responsible citizenship. Regarding the specific objectives, what is to be achieved is to encourage the active inclusion of people with disabilities, highlighting the importance of human rights and inviting participants from the rest of the countries that have a lack of capacity to attend the exchange. Thanks to this, they will be able to develop new methods and will have support in the development of communication skills, speaking in a language that is not their mother tongue (English) and knowing other types of languages such as visual or auditory, for example. We also aim to educate all participants in inclusion and tolerance, promoting intercultural awareness, mutual respect and social dialogue, improving their language skills by participating in team activities shared with our European partners, regardless of whether they have disabilities or not. Of course, several of the objectives are focused on people with disabilities: we want to improve their skills so that they develop others in the framework of non-formal learning. As a whole, we want to achieve a project that encourages its participants to know the language, its functions, characteristics and, above all, participate with people who have disabilities and be able to collaborate together.
