Objectives

In the months prior to the submission of the project application, we encountered an increase in events, such as Brexit, the resurgence of extreme right-wing parties (as in Italy, Austria, Brazil or in some regional elections, such as Andalusia), which led to an immediate increase in hate speech and crimes, followed by a fluctuating but continuous level of xenophobia and misreporting in the day-to-day media, and a series of racially motivated attacks against EU citizens and members of ethnic and other minority communities. At the time of writing, we were confronted with LGBT-phobic attacks in Barcelona, racist and xenophobic false news and false stories in tabloids and online media relating to immigration, online radicalisation and violence, extremism, death threats against parliamentarians and human rights activists in various parts of the world, and racist and sexist hate speech including homophobic, anti-Semitic and Islamophobic narratives. The rise of parties with more extreme, anti-European views and xenophobic attitudes continues to increase in several European and global countries. Digital public space has also brought a new space full of both opportunities and threats. The main objective of this European training course in Human Rights Education, Democratic Citizenship and Counteracting Hate Speech was to equip youth workers and educators with the knowledge, skills and attitudes in Human Rights Education, Democratic Citizenship Education and Counteracting Hate Speech to enable them to address and respond to the current problems that young people face. The main outlines of the training course were as follows: - To provide opportunities for youth workers and educators to have a deeper understanding of the various aspects of human rights mechanisms, instruments and methods of work - To help participants develop the skill set based on key components of Human Rights Education (HRE) in the course programme, largely based on the available Council of Europe training resources and methods; - To provide guidance and support to participants in the use of online and offline resources in carrying out their activities in defence and support of human rights at local and national level as citizens, residents and members of their respective communities; - To provide guidance to expand the network in support of the No Hate Speech (NHSM) movement in Catalonia and other European countries. The specific objectives have been: To develop a knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of Human Rights (HR) and Human Rights Education (HRE) To obtain an overview of human rights and human rights instruments in an international and national/regional context. Develop core competencies in HRE. Understand the current situation and challenges to human rights, especially at the national/regional and local level, and how these relate to the practices of the participants. Be able to critically assess one's own current practices in HRE. To introduce the participants to the approaches and activities of the COMPASS 2012 Edition and to present further tools related to the topic of HRD. Enable the participants to develop programmes and activities (including variations of the COMPASS activities) in HRE. Raise awareness about the importance of HRE for creating a culture of human rights in youth work, formal education and community education settings. Create sustainable and transferable HRE-based approaches within the broader youth work, formal education and community education settings Improve the use of HRE-based approaches in youth environments in culture, leisure and sport. Provide solid training on the No Hate Speech Movement (NHSM) campaign and its tools and measures, such as addressing, informing, countering and responding to hate speech; Strengthen future cooperation in the existing NHSM network in Catalonia and Europe. This project has worked to support the role of youth work in promoting active citizenship, avoiding marginalisation and violent radicalisation (Paris Declaration).
