Objectives

New elections will be held in the European Parliament and citizens by mid-2019, between May 23 and 26. It is therefore from the YOUTH COMMITMENT Project we want to know the perspective and vision of young people regarding these elections in particular, about the importance of participating in political life and their opinion on new phenomena such as those that have emerged in recent years in Europe. The European Parlament admits and highlights the current frequency in the European Union about the high abstention rate in European elections, with only 42.61% of participation in 2014, a figure that is particularly important in the case of young people (only 27% of young Europeans went to the polls in 2014), so the European Parliament has sought to build a community of supporters to help promote greater electoral participation in European elections. Young people aged 18 to 24 were the age group that participated least in the last European Elections in 2014, only 27% did so, and that is why the European Parliament considers it essential to motivate to respond to the challenges faced by the European Union at present, such as migration, climate change, youth unemployment or the fight against populism and misinformation, among other issues. That is why, from the YOUTH COMMITMENT Project, we intend to carry out an analysis that will allow us to know how the young participants in the project have lived the 2019 European elections, their degree of interest and their involvement in politics and space. common European. In order to achieve this goal, different spaces of debate will be carried out, carried out by the young participants, shared with people of different cultures and age range, who have experienced other situations and times in which they were not allowed to vote. Thanks to this, these young people will obtain a different point of view and more information that can enhance their defense of democracy. These objectives are intimately related to those pursued by the Erasmus + program by promoting awareness of a European learning area, improving the level of skills and competences of young people and greater intercultural awareness. All this space of deepening and reasoning will facilitate the internalization of a deeper concept of European citizenship among our young people, through transnational cultural and ideological references, creating a reflection on European society on which the concept of contemporary Europe was constituted, valuing more if the importance of the right to vote in a society and universal suffrage, acquiring in this way a greater understanding of the current European Union. Consequently, it will induce a deeper, more open and more respectful understanding of our present through the discovery, harmonization and internalization of those values that, above all differences - cultural, ethnic, religious, economic - unite us with the rest of European countries . So not only will we be able to move consciences, but we will also be promoting a more united society, in which young people will identify with each other and discover the common values they share with other young Europeans.
