The main goal was to get good examples and best practices of how to plan, implement and assess multidisciplinary learning modules in such way that integration of school disciplines, as the National Core Curriculum requires, would be realized. Especially the secondary teachers were to benefit from this kind of in-service training. For them, it is not as natural to combine several school subjects to create multidisciplinary learning modules as for classteachers. Primary teachers wanted to develop their skills in foreign language teaching, utilizing multiple learning environments and using technology in multidisciplinary and integrative approach. All teachers wanted to learn good practices to mentor the student teachers and help them to plan, implement and assess different kinds of multidisciplinary learning units. Furthermore, our aim was to integrate good practises of inclusive and strength based pedagogy, and to enhance theme work and mentoring skills. In addition to these, one goal was to benefit the use of technology in integrative instruction. Promoting foreign language skills and increasing multilingual awareness contribute to internationalization at home.
Teacher Training School (JNOR) of the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) is part of the biggest teacher training unit in Finland. Our main objectives are to provide basic and secondary education and supervised teaching practice for classroom, subject and special needs teachers. Research, experimentation and development work play a significant role. JNOR belongs to the eNorssi national network. This network cooperates with the Finnish National Agency for Education. Our school is active in national and international projects and arranges study visits for international visitors. We offer regional in-service training. This project "Integrative instruction and multidisciplinary learning modules in mentoring in teaching practise" aimed at integrative instruction in such a way that different school subjects combined form multidisciplinary learning modules, thus promoting broad based learning according to the National Core Curriculum. For the student teachers it is very important to learn how to plan, realize, assess and evaluate multidisciplinary learning units in practice. We also wanted to integrate language pedagogy, technology and inclusion into multidisciplinary instruction. The teachers' foreign language skills were to improve.
