Objectives

The "Let's move throughout the Canal du Midi" project will address themes related to cultural and economic heritage and highlight the importance of preserving the environment, contributing to the sustainable development of a territory. This project will build on the rich cultural, economic and environmental heritage offered by the Canal du Midi and the Occitan territory. Built between 1667 and 1694, it is considered one of the most remarkable achievements of modern civil engineering. The Canal du Midi revolutionized the transport and circulation of goods by river in the South of France under the Ancien Régime. However, from the 19th century onwards, the Canal du Midi gradually became competitive with new modes of transport linked to industrialisation, and in particular with the construction of railways. Thus, it was in the 1990s that freight transport on the Canal du Midi became anecdotal. Little by little, river tourism is developing. This tourism is notably reinforced by the inscription of the Canal in 1996 by UNESCO. The Canal du Midi has remarkable structures that make it of exceptional world heritage interest. We wish to build on the example set by the Canal du Midi, in its transformation from an economic to a cultural heritage, in order to raise awareness among participants of the challenges of heritage enhancement and sustainable development. We will use soft mobility with alternative and sustainable means of transport. Participants will travel the canal by bike, on foot and by barge. During this project, they will have the opportunity to exchange with the local population, participate in various workshops on the environment, meet the experts of the Canal du Midi, discover the ancestral trades related to this heritage, while allowing them to discover the Occitanie region. Several objectives have been set: - Raising awareness of cultural diversity, heritage and the environment in Europe - Promote intercultural exchanges and the active participation of young people at local, national and international levels through heritage. - To promote the well-being and personal and professional development and improve the employability of participants through a European mobility project. - To enable young people to discover and exchange ideas on economic alternatives and promote alternative and sustainable means of transport. - Promote new synergies between the different local organizations through voluntary activities Through this project, we aim to encourage young people to actively engage in European democratic life; to strengthen international cultural relations; to empower and empower them through the activities they will carry out and the results they will create. We also hope that this project will contribute to the personal development and well-being of the young person through the discovery of the territory, the acquisition of knowledge, interpersonal skills and know-how that he or she can acquire. By participating in this project, sharing their ideas and knowledge, and engaging in reflection related to the enhancement of the intangible, tangible and cultural heritage, participants will be involved in defining a common project that they will have the opportunity to enrich as they meet. In addition to being a rich contribution in terms of human and practical skills, this experience will enable them to become aware of their citizenship through a commitment to a project of general interest.
