Objectives

According to Borden, Schlomer & Wiggs (2011), youth work is an evolving profession, that constantly needs new tools that the youth workers can make use of in the new scenarios that they face. We did a research among some of the youth workers of the partner organisations and we found out that a number of youth workers feel that they need new tools that they can make use of so as to make their youth work more interesting, more inclusive and more interactive. From there we came up with the idea of equipping our youth workers with knowledge on how they can make use of board games as a tool in their youth work to promote active citizenship. Thus the main aim of this project is to equip participants with knowledge on how create new tools that they can make use of in their youth work. The focus will be on making use of board games as a tool. However, the knowledge gained can be used for creating different tools for different topics. As board games can be used as a tool on different subjects, we decided to tackle the subject of active citizenship in order to increase the level of competences and skills of young people and raise awareness about European citizenship. Thus, an objective of this training is to encourage active participation of young people in socio-political democratic life on local, national and European level. We aim to raise awareness about the learner-centered approach in developing Non-formal educational activities for young people on the topic of citizenship education and European citizenship while developing, practicing and evaluating tools which aim at enhancing young people’s feeling of ownership and belonging to Europe. We will encourage discussion about what role do young people play in Europe through the creation and use of Board Games while fostering mutual understanding, solidarity, intercultural learning and intercultural dialogue between young people coming from different cultural backgrounds. Other objectives include providing opportunities for youth workers to develop multiplying initiatives to be implemented in their respective countries; sharing experiences and good practices of active citizenship education from local level among different target groups and promoting Erasmus+ Programme and Youthpass as a recognition tool for non-formal and informal learning in youth work. The long-term goal that is set to be reached by fulfilling the main aim and objectives of this training course is to help raise the quality of (European) citizenship education and improve active participation of young people in European youth work thanks to the dissemination process.
