Objectives

With the implementation of this project we wanted to achieve several objectives: firstly, to encourage students to research about local history and to realize the interconnection with historical processes in Europe and the world. In this way students can develop a positive attitude towards local and national history. Secondly, the activities in this project could also motivate students to actively participate in the current issues of local community. Doing so, students are becoming active citizens which one of the main objectives of modern educational systems in Europe and the world.

Background

Industrial heritage consists of the remains of industrial culture which are of historical, technological, social, architectural or scientific value. Hence, it is considered to be the important part of the European cultural heritage. This initiative aimed at promoting good practice to transform Europe's industrial, religious and military heritage that have lost their original function for new use(r)s and to turn it into a driver of economic and social development for European cities and regions. Rijeka is the city with very interesting history, especially regarding industrial heritage. Unfortunately, a great majority of this heritage is abandoned and devastated. There are some attempts of local authorities for revalorization of such heritage but in our opinion it is not enough. Therefore, we applied for this project with intention to raise awareness among students and whole local community for this topic.
