Objectives

Formal education, which is driven by test taking, is increasingly failing to require students to ask the kind of questions that lead to informed decisions, development of critical thinking. According to the research performed on the final exams students take to graduate school, only 11.6 % of tasks in biology exam tested critical thinking, 3.8 % – in geography exam. However, critical thinking is crucial to adapt to rapidly changing world due to technological breakthrough, globalization, digitalization and other similar processes. Low level of critical thinking competences of youth resulting in poorer performance to adapt to changing world is mirrored in statistic. According to “Statistics on young people neither in employment nor in education or training (NEETs)”, youth are struggling to transfer from education to employment “The transition has become more prolonged and increasingly unpredictable, with young people switching jobs more frequently and taking longer to become established in the labour market, either by choice or necessity.” This results in approximately 16.9 million people being NEETs of the age 20–34, as almost one in five of this subpopulation (18.3 %) (https://goo.gl/W4nxxn). We have been discussing need of critical thinking competences with our friends and other young people from community at several events organized by our NGO to disseminate results of previous projects. We noticed general interest to this specific competence of more young people, thus decided to perform online test to see level of critical thinking. Shockingly, more than a half of us did not reach the satisfactory level for our age. We understand that online test cannot be taken for granted but as a strong indicator of low level of critical thinking competences – yes. Another indicator – harder integration to the society. After deeper discussion we realized that 2 out of 3 young people who took the test graduated high school but did not enrol to university, are struggling to find a job in our community. Youth exchange (YE) will take place between 28.8.-06.9.2019 in Slovakia, Pocuvadlianske jazero gathering 56 participants accompanied by group leaders and facilitators for 10 days from 4 countries: HU, SK, ES, LT. Our project reflects the permanent priorities of the E+ to raise social inclusion and increase the development of critical thinking. Goal of the youth exchange is to increase critical thinking competences of 56 young participants from 4 countries as a powerful tool for better integration to the society, smoother transition from education to work, higher social inclusion. Objectives of the project are: O1. To improve critical thinking competences of 56 young participants from 4 countries. O2. To raise awareness of 56 participants from 4 countries about benefits of critical thinking and fields it may be used. O3. To facilitate safe non-formal learning context in which 56 participants from 4 countries can share their thoughts and brainstorm on dissemination ideas of project results in their local communities. We want to contribute to a lasting change in our lives by reasonably choosing future, desired education, getting a job or starting entrepreneurial activities thanks to increased critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, communication and open-mind competences. We expect to contribute to raising social inclusion by being able to integrate into community ourselves and helping others by implementing dissemination workshops after our youth exchange. This all together contributes to better quality of life.
