Nowadays we are facing several global challenges and environmental issues. Sustainable development are among the biggest challenges of the 21st century, and the solution is waiting for our generation and young people - especially those working with other young people. From the mainstream perspective we live in a period of overproduction, consumption and strong advertisement. These topics and problems are getting closer and closer effecting our daily life – many times young people do not know what to do with it as the problems seem so big. Young people and especially youth workers need to be clear with the theme of ’sustainability’ and be able to transmit the message also for others since good practices and innovative techniques can influence our daily life in a positive way. In our project we aim to break into parts the topic of sustainability, learn about its economic, environmental and social aspects and see the responsibility of the individual in the system how he can care more about his surroundings and the environment. We put ideas into actions by creative recycling workshops which is the base of our non formal learning method. We approach the topic of sustainability in a very practical way and we aim to release the concepts of responsible life where all we do now is keeping rules and limiting ourselves – we want to show that sustainability as well as recycling can be lot of fun and joy, and in the mean time a creation process happens which shows result and brings the message to other people. The skills of creativity what we develop in the recycling workshops can be greatly used in finding solutions and everyday practices, to act upon environmental changes. The method what we use we call ’creative recycling’, it is a process when we create objects out of waste materials which can be found in each household, we work with plastic, textile, paper, tetra pack, etc – these materials are available for everyone, regardless of the status quo, residency. Therefore in this project we especially target young people who are coming from disadvantaged circumstances or live with mental- or physical disabilities. According to our experience youth workers who are working with such target groups need innovative methods and techniques to present, this way also their job becomes more creative and sustainable. Working and creating together in an integrated group brings the participants to a new level of accepting each other, listening, communication, develops social skills and give a whole new perspective to one’s attitude towards young people with special needs. Youth workers are open to our method and are eager to use it in their work with youth. According to our experiences form the last 2,5 half a year introducing the method to young people living with physical and mental disabilities improves their life skills and using it in long term supports their integration and their chances in the labor market. In the past years we had the chance to prove the method in different groups of young people who are living with disabilities and we got positive feedback every time, so our partners encouraged to share the method with their youth workers and volunteers. We believe that innovation happens when people and organisations start to connect and share their knowledge and experience. In our experience creating together is a new and unusual way of connecting, because during creation we open up in a different way, our brain focuses also on the process itself. The fact that we create from waste materials gives us the chance to look at creativity and design thinking in a holistic way where recycling not only means creating an object but also the re-discovery and re-usage of our own resources, senses and skills in order to connect in a real context. We also focus on the importance of inclusion – no one can be excluded from the creation process, the techniques we use are easy-to-learn and, there is always space for self-expression and creativity and the materials we use are also available for everyone. The aim of the project is to promote creativity and inclusion by discovering and applying a new method what we call „creative recycling” in youth work, and especially in work with disadvantaged groups. Our objectives are: • to promote inclusion, creativity and ’network thinking’ in general and in youth work by using the method of creative recycling • to equip youth workers with the method of creative recycling to be able to react on environmental issues in an innovative way, transfer it to their work and reach wide public • to include young people living with disabilities in the sustainable lifestyle, support the first steps, improve their sense of initiative and creativity • to empower young people to become active citizens, through sharing of critical knowledge and understanding of a sustainable way of living
