Name of the project: Open Your Art! Topic: Connection between participation based art methods and youth work The role of art has been constantly changing since the begininng of human history. Aritstic pieces used to be just decorations, or they were forms of religious or political messages, nowadays they are mainly seen as tools for self-expression. It would be a mistake to think that this interpretation will be permanent. The changes of the past 25 years have redifined art too. The genre of the autonomous artist has weakened, while a lot of form shave appeared which are not yet part of the artistic canon (activism, hacktivism, blogart, etc.). The significant artists of our era are working in groups, and they are dealing with issues of our society. Just as in a fruitful Erasmus+ Youth Exchange. The aim of our project was to provide an intercultural dialogue in Vác, Hungary, between 24 artists, youth workers and the ones who work on the frontiers of art. We observed the task of contemporary art and it’s role in social responsibility, the possibilities of art tools in youth work and how an artist or an art group can profit from a youth exchange. During our project, we created groups of mixed nationalities, who created art pieces on the streets of Vác. The participant artists and youth workers could take part in each and every phase of the work, they could work together, got to know each other’s viewpoint, and they got feedback as well. As you can see, we believe that the most important element of our project is to observe the connection between Erasmus+ and contemporary art. This way we would like to encourage the participants to create their very own art piece, or to add the art-thinking to their working method. These sessions won’t only be useful for youth workers, but for artists too, as with the help of the new formal and non formal education methods, they can put their future projects into a new and fresh perspective, maybe with the help of some youth workers. This mentality is not just an aim for this project, but what we pursue as an organization as well, thanks to the overlapping we recognize among these fields during our work. Our examples are the contemporary efforts of art, which not just recognize a problem, but they want to create a solution with the forms of activism. Maybe it is not a coincidence, that today’s art thinking goes in the same direction as the Erasmus+ youth exchange program’s aims and tools are: community life, group work and intercultural dialogues are all very important aspects of contemporary art. This way, different possilities of mobility could be important milestones of art dialogue. This would not be surprising, because there were some very important and famous art colonies (we only have to think about the ones in Gödöllő, Nagybánya or Szolnok, or to add an international one, the Barbizon School, where Millet, Corot and László Paál acted actively). In our project we tried to observe the possibilities of an artist who would like to think of an Erasmus+ project, or a youth worker who would like to use the tools of art: we shown their connections and possibilities between these two fields. We created an intercultural dialogue between the artist and youth workers who would like to think in projects, encouraging all of them to involve each other in their own work.
