Objectives

The main objective of the exchange is to provide a platform for young people, coming from different backgrounds to learn through creativity, art and design, and gaining new skills to cooperate, create and realize ideas together. TARGET GROUP The target group is unique: the participants are partly youth, who are European citizens and partly young refugees or migrants living in Europe. ISSUES AND NEEDS Migrant participants have difficulties in the integration into European communities caused by the lack of common language and possibilities of self-expression; the consequences of losing their home, goods and community; cultural differences and their lack of connection with locals. At the same time European youth has few opportunities to learn about migrants issues by experience, to work in a culturally and socially diverse environment, and to realize creative ideas and experience first-hand the effects of democratic decision making. We see the need to provide a safe environment for these groups to share experiences, ideas and to learn and create together in mutual respect. OBJECTIVES We prepared a programme that would, by means of design approach, induce their acquisition of skills such as self-expression, self-representation, problem-solving, decision-making and team work. Together they learn new skills and tools through the process of design thinking (Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test). We aim to empower the young migrants and refugees to have better access the European society encouraging and supporting them to take responsibilities, unleashing their talents and helping them to gain self-confidence. The exchange provides opportunity for 20 young people living in Europe to experience an intercultural environment, learning, thinking and creating together in mixed teams, overcoming prejudices and getting a deeper understanding of their own cultures and identities By the end of the project, participants will be able to solve complex problems with the help of design thinking, plan and realize a project from the beginning until the end, improving their decision-making and leadership skills, experience team work, practice patience, persistence and tolerance, and empower European and migrant youth to create their common product. Through the exchange the coordinators will promote European programs like Erasmus+, international voluntary initiatives, to share information and good practices about youth mobility programs and possibilities. METHODOLOGY The methodology is based on the concept of “design thinking”: a human-centered, iterative design process consisting of 5 steps—Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test. It is useful in tackling problems that are ill-defined or unknown.Through the design process participants make their own decisions: they develop their creative problem-solving skills and their self-expression ability, create new and common goods and values, and by this a new community; The creative approach gives a great opportunity for working in teams, sharing personal stories and creating deeper interpersonal connections. Considering also that the participants have very diverse levels of English - the exchange gives the possibility for using non-verbal and visual communication to share views and to understand each other in a secure, well-organised and coordinated way. STRUCTURE Through designing different products the participants will experience the process and the creative decision making in different situations: working alone, in pairs, small groups and also altogether as a community. This will also give structure to the project. The exchange will be built up by three phases: ME (individual work)-, WE (working in pairs and small groups) -, and COMMUNITY (working in a big group)
