Objectives

Active Citizenship Through Sport (ACTS) is a Youth Exchange (YE) proposed by Budapest Association for International Sports (BAIS) jointly with 5 other European partner organisations. The participants will have an emerging interest or demonstrable awareness of issues in the public sphere around national citizenship and EU democratic life, and limited previous exchange experience. Studies show that there is low participation among youth in elections, civic initiatives, and community groups, especially in the countries to be represented at the YE. This indicated an opportunity for the organisations to design a YE to encourage youth about the importance of active citizenship and to make a difference in our local and national communities and on a European level. The main objectives of ACTS youth exchange are to: - Encourage active democratic participation in local, national and European contexts; - Convey European Union values and foster European citizenship identity; - Create ambassadors of healthy, active lifestyles to be advocated their local communities; - Enhance critical thinking, intercultural awareness, and their participation in international mobility projects in the future; - Strengthen respect for human rights and tolerance through shared sport-themed, social experiences in a diverse, exploratory and supportive environment. Sport actitivies will be adapted to observe and understand citizenship behaviours, and the Education Through Sport (ETS) methodology will provide the platform to introduce non-formal learning to youth groups, to empower individual and collective democratic responsibility. Application of the methodology will be refined during a dedicated Advanced Planning Visit (APV). During both APV and YE stages, participants will develop transferable skills and prompt personal growth, while discovering other European cultures through peer learning and sharing, strengthening multiculturalism and solidarity. At the European level, ACTS will make promote the opportunities offered to young people in the EU, especially by the Erasmus+ programme. The dissemination of project results and lasting material will also increase awareness of the opportunities offered by the Programme and highlight the European added value of activities supported by Erasmus+, particularly those implemented through sport. All partner and Budapest Association for International Sports will be recognised for their work, and its contribution to policy discussions with concrete ideas and solutions in the fields of sport, democracy, and citizenship. This project will inspire other organisations, both in Hungary and in the countries of our Partners, to create initiatives to overcome social challenges in Europe. Communication channels and cooperation networks will be reinforced across Europe, and organisations will have continued access to a unique forum to share best practices and create tools for effective social intervention in their communities. Participants will become catalysts of positive change in their own local communities, effecting higher involvement and participation in the civic sphere and community life. Increased civic spirit within the individual participants can be expected, and consequently, among their social circles, a target group and indirect audience for the Youth Exchange educative mission. This will contribute to the scale of the talent and resource pool for NGOs, non-profits and other public bodies to discover and collaborate with motivated, capable and knowledgeable young citizens throughout their life.
