Objectives

In connection with the project, we found it very important that the students, in addition to their professional and foreign language development, be as independent as possible in a foreign environment and experience new situations, not leaving them alone, but supporting their fulfilment. In terms of groups, we tried to put students together in a variety of ways, such as by class, age, and professional field. Within the application, two groups - a total of 26 students - took part in a mobility in Chemnitz, Germany (12 German speaking students) and in Split, Croatia (14 English speaking students). The majority, 60-70% of the students were car mechanics, and the others were beauticians. We intended to select students from several other professional areas as well, such as builders or publishers, however, due to the Covid pandemic we encountered several difficulties. On the one hand we couldn’t find host institutions, on the other hand it was also difficult to encourage our students. Moreover, our additional goal was to build new relationships, even new friendships for the students, and also to find new partners for our school in the long run. Furthermore, it also increases the reputation of our institution that many of our students have been able to study abroad so far. Unfortunately, in most cases there is no other chance for our disadvantaged students to go abroad.

Background

Our institution has set several goals for our students and teachers in the 2019 Erasmus + application. We expected students to develop their professional and language skills primarily. We consider the development of students' professional competence to be very important. Furthermore, to be able to cope in a foreign environment and to experience other methods that are related to their profession and can be of interest later on. With the help of this, this project provides an excellent opportunity to learn methods that help learning. As far as our teachers are concerned, our main motivation was to get as many colleagues as possible to take part in language courses in order to help them gain more confidence in speaking foreign languages. We find that our teachers’ knowledge of foreign languages fades and they lose their self- confidence if they do not have the opportunity to use their language skills in practice. Our long-term goal is to be able to participate in Erasmus + applications as a host institution, for which the development of the foreign language competence of our colleagues is extremely important.
