Project summary

The main objective of our project is to develop a new visual educational system for mathematics: the LOGIFACES methodology. The project is based on the Logifaces game, which is a geometric skill-developing game. The novelty value of Logifaces lies in the three dimensional shift compared to the two dimensional nature of the traditional logic puzzle games. Contrary to the majority of traditional and contemporary logic games and school toolkits Logifaces deals with spatial geometry. Instead of using colors, different shapes Logifaces focuses on the changes only in the 3rd dimension. The solution is a tactile spatial surface highlighting the relationship between basic geometry and complex organic forms. A further important feature of the game from STEAM point of view is the artistic values. The complexity emerging out of its simplicity makes it more than a game, more than art, more than mathematics: these elements come all together – creating synergy in education. For centuries, the European way of teaching geometry followed the Euclidian path, and was limited to a row of theorems to be validated by the use of lengths and angles turned into numbers with algebraic instruments. It tamed visualization in children’s minds and maked it nearly impossible to understand and receive non-Euclidian geometry, which is indispensable in modern sciences. Teachers of Mathematics working in higher education still witness the damage this unilateral approach has caused. We can change this. The demand assessment based on results received by Logifaces workshops. The last five years we organized more than 80 events (elementary schools and high schools, universities, conferences, mathematics festival, museums) in 10 different countries. All feedbacks confirmed the educational potential of Logifaces as a skill development device. The project is based on the scientific results received about the game and the outcomes of the experts involved in the project. In the course of activities with children of all ages and in more than ten countries, the inventor has detected a clear need for an educational approach based on Logifaces. Our main purpose is therefore, with the involvement of different international partners, to develop an educational methodology resulting in: • teaching materials (teacher’s book and student workbook) • an internet interface, online materials • training of students and teachers in partner schools • dissemination of intellectual products in the EU Our project is based on collaboration among six institutions in four countries. The coordinator of the project will be the Planbureau Ltd, the design studio of the inventor of the game. The studio has put a strong emphasis on testing the game’s educational potential in the last five years. Our aim was to examine and see the opportunities of the application of Logifaces in a wide range. We organized workshops in schools, universities and conferences to receive feedbacks and suggestions about the relevance and validity of Logifaces as an educational device. Our assumptions have been verified, based on the receptions and comments the necessity of the methodology is valid. We selected 4 partner schools from 4 countries with different educational systems. Our training program deals with traditional education (mathematics) but it also pays special attention to pedagogy and talent development. The use of ICT-based methods is also a meaningful part of the program. Our partners are the Hungarian Lauder School whose aim is to develop the academic, social, and artistic skills of students so they will be productive and responsible citizens, an Austrian high school, the Serbian Petro Kuzmjak Elementary and Secondary School, the Experience Workshop, an alternative, non-governmental educational organization and Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz, Austria.Dr. Zsolt Lavicza is the key person and founder of the popular math application Geogebra with over 2 million users from all over the world. All provide testing, measurement, piloting and teaching. We will hold six Transnational Meetings. During these, partners will discuss and decide about the project tasks, monitor project implementation, develop intellectual products, and present the results achieved. The coordinating team will hold one-day LOGIFACES Conferences and workshops for teachers in every countries. Each partner school will organize one Teacher/Student Training course for teachers and students of local schools. The priority of the project will be the creation of intellectual products and Multiplier Events in the partner countries. The LOGIFACES project will create an educational methodology for skill-The results will be published in a methodology book and related workbooks. We will offer the license of the methodology book free of charge to the state and private school systems of EU countries. The other outcome of the project will be a multi-lingual interactive online interface accessible to everyone for free.

Objectives

Our emphasized objectives were to develop a curriculum based educational method and tool which help the integration of Logifaces tool in classroom education and to improve the usage of the game as a social skill developer one. This includes a methodological textbook for teachers and an exercise book for pupils too. All the information is now accessible on GeoGebra and the project website and we will provide training for the teachers and students. The methodology has been developed by pupils and teachers together and the materials will be presented together as well. The methodology is applicable to both students and teachers. By using Geogebra as the online platform for presenting the Logifaces methodology (IO4, online version) the reach is significant.

Background

The main objective of the Logifaces methodology project was to prepare a new STEAM educational system tool to adapt it for and spread it in EU-wide school education. The project was based on the Logifaces game, which is a spatial geometric, logic, and sensorimotor skill development game. The novelty value of Logifaces lies in the three dimensional shift compared to the two dimensional nature of the traditional logic puzzle games. Summarizing, it can be used universally and impact the educational system on several aspects, particularly in switching between dimensions, combinatorics, algebra, graph theory, spatial geometry, relief art, and design thinking. It improves the visual perception and memory, orientation in space and tactility and social skills like communication, cooperation and following the rules. The complexity of Logifaces origins in its simplicity, which is the most important key to arouse interest. Our emphasized objectives were to develop a curriculum based educational method which helps the integration of Logifaces tool in classroom education and to improve the usage of the game as a social skill developer one.
