Objectives

The main goal of the project was for students to experience successful and pleasant time at Landspitali during their clinical practice and first year of career. The key to successful learning is to have professional staff at Landspitali experience their role as facilitators to be important, valued and joyful way to both teach and learn themselves. Methods of teaching and the opportunities at a hospital to practice have changed in the last years, e.g. with simulation teaching, active learning methods and team work. It is of interest to add programs that more health care professions can access to assist their new staff in career development The objective of the project was to enhance the knowledge of teaching and learning in practice setting, integrated with safe patient care. This included 1. to learn about nationwide educational programs for health care staff and students in Scotland 2. to introduce the role of the facilitator in different settings abroad to nurses' aids and pharmacy technicians who are now being recognized as important part of the educational role at Landspitali 3. to have more accredited teacher to facilitate simulation teaching in simulation center and on-site where all health care staff is involved 4.to learn how to utilize standardized quality procedures to teach team work to students and staff in high tech environment such as the operational room and 5. to observe how to facilitate clinical practice for students in a new curricula

Background

At Landspitali we planned to increase cooperation with European university hospitals and other organisations educating various health care students. We know from previous experience of visits to European university hospitals that our staff returns enthusiastic and inspired with innovative ideas of teaching in clinical practice. The focus in the European developmental plan was to be on the development of in-house curriculum, innovative methods for learning in clinic for students and staff. So far Landspitali staff has enriched their knowledge and practices mainly by visits and job shadowing colleagues in Europe and will continue to do so. Now, we were also interested in cooperating with colleagues developing innovative methods to enhance the educational role hospitals have and to provide our future health care workers with knowledge of the best practices in their beginning period at work. We belief we have a lot to learn and some to give in developing educational environment in health care settings.
