The aim of this partnership between Proyecto Kieu and Húnaþing vestra Óríon is for the youth group of Iceland to document and to teach the youth group from Spain how to design, build, and maintain a community project. In 2019 the Icelandic youth group built a school garden (please see the garden at https://www.hunaklub.org/the-garden-project.html). We would like to expand this project and make it international by documenting how we have developed the garden as a community project and then implementing this project in Spain. We would like to specifically learn about sustainable community development through the theme of a garden and learn how community building is done in other countries. What are the similarities and differences between our communities? What are our assets that we can bring together on this project? What are the challenges? The youth groups will use this project to connect with each other, to our home community, and to international communities. The pedagogical philosophy behind this project is through hands-on learning we create connections to place and to nature. There is great value in community gardens. For example, it helps transform a place into hands-on science activity while connecting with the earth and to each other. Before this youth exchange, the Garden Project, holistically, was an experiment for the Icelandic youth to learn about the process of sustainable community development. Then, the next phase is to learn how to teach others what we have done. The process of establishing the garden as a community project will be documented at every phase, including how we connected with local experts, and how we engaged our community to help build the garden. The Icelandic youth will then travel to Spain to teach the Spanish youth how they did the Garden Project and help the Spanish youth group develop their own Garden Project in Spain. We will develop a method to better display what we did so that our story is seen both locally and internationally. During the YE in Spain, both youth groups will come up with other ideas to start another community based project for the YE in 2020. Then, both youth groups will then develop the next steps to prepare and to implement the project in their home communities. After the YE in Spain, both the Spanish and Icelandic youth groups will communicate with each other about each group's progress. They will compare and contrast the similarities and/or differences between the process of engaging the community in sustainable community development--first through a garden, then through their own project idea together. Both groups will document their progress and then, the Spanish youth group will come to Iceland to share what they have learned and implement the project together in Iceland. Both youth groups will learn step-by-step the tools that are needed in organizing, leading, and maintaining a community project. In addition, they will learn that community-based projects not only impact their lives, but also the lives of others in the community, and may have international impacts through the sharing of knowledge. Together, we will learn the benefits of sustainable community development while also learning how to teach others in a fun and creative way within an international setting. The main objectives of our project are 1) to develop local identity through creating sustainable community projects; 2) to learn the steps to creating, organizing, leading, and maintaining a community project. 3) to create an atmosphere where youth are encouraged to learn about other cultures and their history; and 4) to establish lifelong friendships and lifelong learning.
