The project "Promoting empowerment of VET system through sustainable entrepreneurial initiatives in quality pig breeding" (BREED) will offer to to VET learners the learning opportunity to confront a sustainable business in quality pig breeding. The project is promoted by expert partners in the European countries Italy, Poland, Greece, Portugal and Lithuania proposes outdoor quality pig breeding as area for sustainable VET entrepreneurial initiatives. Pig farming in Europe has to face three major challenges of sustainability: economic, social and environmental. Th BREED project addresses aspects of all these three areas of sustainability, as a basis to improve productivity and competitiveness of pig production systems as well as environmental sustainability, and to enhance consumer acceptability by addressing animal welfare and product quality. Pig breeding is suitable for VET also for other aspects. Despite the importance of economic aspects, pig breeding requires nowadays high quality work, good job satisfaction and a positive image of livestock production. These sectoral requirements of quality fully match with the identified target of quality VET work as lever for the improvement of VET system. The project BREED aims at fostering the resilience of the pig industry from local to European level, by training new and existing breeders, via an integrated action addressing all the three pillar of sustainability (animal welfare, profitability and environmental impact) equally in an inter- and transdisciplinary approach. The action proposed will furthermore promote empowerment through the integrated and multidisciplinary method, fully exploiting the possibilities offered by the digital area and the socials, hence sharing and participation. The BREED intellectual outputs will be: O1 Guide to quality pig breeding for VET trainers O2 OER BREED VET toolkit for sustainable entrepreneurial initiatives in quality pig breeding O3 BREED motivation guide to quality pig breeding O4 BREED community BREED events will be the following: National multiplier events E1 BREED Seminar in Bologna (Northen Italy), organized by DINAMICA E2 BREED Seminar in Assergi - L'Aquila (Central Italy), organized by PNGSL E3 BREED Seminar in Varsavia (Poland), organized by SGGW E4 BREED Seminar in Volos (Greece), organized by UTH E5 BREED Seminar in Reggio Emilia (Italy), organized by IIAZ E6 BREED Seminar in Arcos de Valdevez (Portugal), organized by EPRALIMA E7 BREED Seminar in Šiaulia (Lithuania), organized by MBITES Conferences E8 Mid-term conference in Volos (Greece), organized by UTH E9 Mid-term international conference in Arcos de Valdevez (Portugal) E10 International final conference in Assergi - L'Aquila (Italy) Mobility learning activities C1 Quality pig breeding techniques in Northern Italy C2 Quality pig breeding techniques in Poland C3 Quality pig breeding techniques in Central Italy C4 Quality pig breeding techniques in Greece BREED transnational project meetings (TPM) Kick-off meeting, organized by DINAMICA in Bologna (Italy); TM2, organized by SGGW in Varsavia (Poland) TM3, organized by MBITES in Šiaulia (Lithuania) TM4, organized by UTH in Volos (Greece) TM5 organized by EPRALIMA in Arcos de Valdevez (Portugal) TM6, organized by P1 PNGSL in Assergi - L'Aquila (Italy)
BREED's strategy promotes the enhancement of the skills and employability of VET students through training and acquisition of new skills. In the context of this conceptual orientation, BREED has integrated relevant considerations in the field of pig farming into a comprehensive and multidimensional approach. The results we expected are the following. (1) During the project, directly to involve a total of over 800 key actors to participate in the implementation of BREED in the project countries: VET teachers / trainers; VET students; political decision makers; other projects; institutional organizations in support of vocational training; stakeholders participating in multiplier events; people from the project partners. (2) After completion of the project: - to achieve the broad use of BREED training, designed to expand over time beyond the duration of the action and into other European countries; - to arouse interest in the BREED concept among VET policy makers, practitioners and students in the project countries and in the EU. - to support the process that will lead over time to the social and economic improvement of local communities in the project countries, as beneficiaries of the success of sustainable pig businesses.
