Early School Leaving / combating failure in educationTeaching and learning of foreign languagesPedagogy and didactics

Objectives

In the school self-assessment report, drawn up for the first time in 2015, as well as in Deed of Guidance of the Headmaster for the Educational Offer Plan, widespread critical issues were identified: • students score in standard national tests were lower than in schools with similar background • lack of planning fully conceived in terms of skills and lack of suitable evaluation tools • partial implementation of the vertical curriculum centered on competences, which made teaching interventions ineffective, so that students found it difficult to acquire strategies for learning and an adequate method of study • difficulty of teachers in developing common strategies and sharing methodological lines, which caused disorientation in students • underestimation of the educational contributions of foreign languages, especially in a European dimension • problematic behaviours of students. With the necessary involvement of the principal and non-teaching staff, KTSM has consolidated the path to improve the educational effectiveness of our school by enhancing staff training in terms of both deeper methodological awareness and the adoption of educational and organizational models, in line with the new educational needs of learners.

Background

ITET "de Viti de Marco" is a high school. Its students’ profile, as a whole, is characterized by low levels of motivation and prerequisites, due to the social cultural and economic background, as well as to the difficulties of our school in providing high added value in such a complex educational environment. Therefore, this project was meant to foster the process of modernization and internationalization of the school, so long-awaited in the Three-year Educational Offer Plan (PTOF). It aimed to converting this complexity into opportunities; to improve, enhance and update the professional levels of the staff and, consequently, to boost the students’ learning outcomes. It was meant to train the staff in European contexts, to encourage participants to rethink their role, first in individual mode and then in a collegial "cascade" way. It addressed the following topics: • improving the educational / didactic paths • fighting against school failure, promoting equity, social and active cohesion, encouraging creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship for future European citizens. • enhancing the teaching / learning process of foreign languages. It paved the way for further European projects and management capacity in this area.
