Objectives

The current project "Right by my side" is aimed at training youth workers in the use of art as a mean of social inclusion and education, specifically when dealing with youngsters with different abilities. People with disabilities represent 15% of the world's population and, being a diverse group, have different needs and require different types and levels of supports. Recent reports show that the participation of people with disabilities in political, public and social life is still excessively low, and this has negative consequences on the fight of exclusion, prejudices and stereotypes. Moreover, in society there is a general negative interest, or no interest at all, in youngsters with disabilities, and in their contribution to the life of their community. Youth work contributes to giving appropriate support to youngsters with disabilities in having more autonomy in their daily life and contributing actively in the society. In many cases, however, organisations and trainers often have fear of working with youngsters with disabilities, and often are not prepared in dealing with them. As a consequence, youth with different abilities are often organised in specific organisations and are not included in the life of NGOs where people without disabilities are the majority. In order to combat this division, and give more space to youth with different abilities in the life of NGOs and non formal education activities, we have identified art as an important tool in overcoming barriers. Art boosts creativity, helps people to express themselves through a different communication channel and, as a consequence, reduces social differences. The main activity of the project will be a Training Course where 21 Youth workers will be trained in developing activities accessible to youngsters with disabilities. The methodology used will be non formal education, supported by formal and informal elements useful to transfer theoretical knowledge, for intercultural understanding and networking. Thanks to their participation in the TC and to the dissemination activities they will organise, the youth workers will contribute to give more space to youth with disabilities in the social life of their communities, through an higher participation of those youngsters in organisations and youth activities. The idea of the project is based on the exchange of experiences and good practices between partners with previous experience and those without. All the partners involved have a strong focus on youth with fewer opportunities, and have the purpose to make their organisations and work more accessible. The main objectives of the project are: - To increase the awareness of facilitators, youth workers and organisations of disability issues; - To empower selected youth/social workers by training them in using non formal education methods based on art as a mean to engage youth with different abilities in society; - To provide youth workers with knowledge, skills and practical experience on working with youngsters with disabilities; - To create a toolkit collecting activities that use art in order to remove social barriers; - To create a network of youth workers who are able to develop activities accessible to people with disabilities; - To identify and remove barriers to active participation of youngsters with disabilities in the life of their community; - To identify new tools and methods that best match the needs of youngsters with fewer opportunities; - To promote transnational partnerships between NGOs active in the youth sector; - To increase participation of youth with disabilities to non formal education activities. The practical output of the training course will be a toolkit collecting the sessions developed by the participants who, after an analysis of the disability issues and study visits to local organisations active in this field, will be guided in the creation of activities based on non formal education and art for youth with different abilities. The Training Course will also contribute to the creation of a Network of youth workers who are able to develop activities accessible to people with disabilities, and to promote transnational partnerships between NGOs active in the youth sector. Thanks to the creation of the toolkit, new activities will be available to NGOs, youth workers and anyone interested in the topic of social inclusion of disadvantaged youngsters. Another important aim of the Training Course, and of the project in general, is the creation of follow up activities at local and international level, aimed at the social inclusion of youngsters with different abilities.
