International migration is a complex phenomenon that touches on a multiplicity of economic, social and security aspects affecting our daily lives in an increasingly interconnected world. According to IOM current estimates are that there are 244 million international migrants globally (or 3.3% of the world’s population).Ranging from films and newspapers to tweets, that coverage may have portrayed migration in one way or another, or simply raised it as a topical issue. Digital media allow for the sharing of information to large and diverse communities, often in real time. While this connectivity allows for greater communication and information flow, the fast and often uncontrolled flow of information can also lead to increasingly polarized representations of refugees/migrants among receiving communities, by conjuring xenophobic viewpoints that effectively ‘strip the humanity’ away fro migrants and refugees. Considering the distorted image of the topic in the media there is a necessity that young people need to learn the basic principles of journalism to share in the media and through that to contribute to elimination of negative stereotypes. As youth workers and teachers we have designed this project for main target group in terms of end users ; young people 18-22 from socially disadvantaged backgrounds , to support improve their journalistic skills with a methodology which will be based on interrelated digital media workshops and the refugee crisis/migration being the focus theme of the project, but also will be adaptable to other topics of societal which will help them not to remain as spectators in their lives and become active citizenship .Methodology will be '' project based '' which will ,promote the group development of assignments. Therefore, we can make working proposals to the youth and, working on them, they may acquire and improve the key competences defined by the teaching team with a real impact on their social context. This can be defined not only through the detection ofproblems but through the detection of opportunities. In this project , our approach won’t be specially focused on problems but on opportunities. That’s because we’ll use “project based” learning which makes it innovative with its methodology .A Project Based Learning is a methodology that places the YOUTH at the center of the learning process, as the “main character” capable of generating solutions in response to the different opportunities and challenges posed by the society. The methodology of the project takes youth form the back seats where they are media consumers and let them drive to become media producers .Youth will be trained about digital photography , digital storytelling, online platforms and social media , after which they will be able to develop new points ofview towards the social issues around and make their own stories. OUTCOMES ARE : 1-AN ONLINE PLATFORM FOR BLENDED LEARNING :In order to guarantee a good knowledge of the instruments, tools and strategies of using virtual platforms, the experts of the project will complete the training contents of the face-to-face training through the provision of more content in the teachinglearning platform of the course. 2-BLOG/VLOG : where one can find the digital stories, videos and blog posts created by our young participants; 3-A WEBSITE where the objectives of the project , the outcomes ( downloadable ), project activities , videos / photos of the meetings , LTT will be uploaded. Though this project, we aimed at the following objectives: - increase knowledge and awareness of the challenges related to migration, migrants and refugees - identify and challenge stereotypes, prejudices and negative cultural dynamics on all sides - enhance the use media technologies to access, store, retrieve and share content to meet their individual and community needs and interests, ideas, information and opinions - let participants' understand how and why media content is produced - Increase participants' awareness of power of media in construction of reality, develop more critical and selective approach to media products and use media tools for creating powerful messages - use of media in the exercise of democratic rights and civil responsibilities - promote active citizenship and social entrepreneurship - improve youth organizations’ capacity to work for/with migrants and refugees - develop a larger sense of understanding and solidarity among countries
The five partners of this project have been - and still are - very active in social issues and in particular migration issues, as they all belong to Countries subject to massive migration flows, causing sometimes frictions and cultural barriers which need to be overcome. Since the preliminary meetings we had before the submission, we all realized there was a significant lack of understanding in our respective Countries upon migration and its impact in the daily life: one of the causes is that media coverage is still not adequate. We believe that new media could improve this. Therefore, enhancing media technologies usage, especially among youngsters, could help to creatively express and communicate ideas, information and opinions on these issues and increase knowledge and awareness of the challenges related to migration, migrants and refugees. Furthermore, youngsters could improve their skills (which is worth for their future life) and help reducing stereotypes, prejudices and negative cultural dynamics
