Project summary

Right to education for refugees - Framework conditions for access to education for asylum seekers, beneficiaries of protection and persons with tolerance (school or vocational education and training) is the main concern of the project "Back to school", which is supported by four partners (Institut für Sprachkurse und Bildungsreisen AG , Institute für berufliche Zukunft gUG, Akademie Führung & Kompetenz of LMU Munich and Fondatsiya Sofiyska Platforma) from three different European countries (Lichtenstein, Germany and Bulgaria). The partners have set out to develop a curriculum for disadvantaged and refugee youth and young adults who are no longer required to attend school, which will enable them to enter the training market. In addition, the project will create a new school subject "European values and democracy", which differs fundamentally from the current subject "Politics". Democracy takes place in designated places, at fixed times, between authorized persons and according to established rules. In this view, we counter the concept of democracy as a way of life. After that, democracy can and should be practiced at all time and in all areas of everyday life (such as family, workplace, public space, school and leisure). To recognize democracy as a way of life means to consciously decide for a democratic coexistence as well as to adopt and promote a corresponding attitude. Specifically, this means developing an awareness of what makes decision-making democratic or undemocratic, and engaging oneself in daily situations through democratic engagement, whether at the public / political or private level. Democracy as a way of life invites people to participate self-confidently and autonomously in the development of society as a whole: at any time and everywhere.

Objectives

The goal of the project was to create a curriculum for an online-secondary school. The thought behind this project was that there are many migrants and “Distant Learners who do not have an education which is accepted in the EU. With this school we would like offer a possibility to all those people wo have not attended a secondary school and do not fit into the age frame for secondary schools to complete a secondary school, no matter where they live. All they need is a computer. With the project we try to create a basis to transfer this school into reality. The initial work for this school is given with this project. The curriculum is ready and some learning units have also been created and were partly uploaded into an online- learning platform. This platform can be found under: https://digitaleducation.triagonal.net/online/login/index.php - The access is username: erasmusplus password: Erasmus.2022

Background

In the last years the number migrants entering Europe has risen drastically and many of those migrants have a lot of work experience, but lack school education in order to get fair jobs in the European countries. In addition to the migrants there are also a large number of people – Distant or Remote learners – who, owing to their cultural background, could not attend or were not allowed to attend a secondary school. The reasons for that can be manifold. The migrants, especially the people who come from the near east and Africa, do not have any experience with European values and quite often the lack the understanding of democracy, gender equality and they have also not become acquainted with human rights. This project aims to implement these facts and the intellectual output 3 – European Values and Democracy. The topics which are dealt with in this output shall help these people to understand what is expected of them in European societies to live a “social togetherness” and to basically shape them into accepted and integrated European citizens.
