Objectives

Final destination is a project about valuing your life and your time which goes hand in hand with understanding our own mortality. Death is a feared and neglected occurrence, which can be a motivation for personal growth. To empower young people to set strategic goals we have explored rituals and traditions, discussed reactions, played simulations, visited a cemetery and interviewed the general public. Final Destination gathered 25 participants form Latvia, Poland, Greece, Germany and Portugal some with disadvantaged background, others from different cultural contexts. Participants learned to look at their life in perspective and look at death as an occurence to be ready for, not to ignore, thus using their time with meaning. We expected the project to shift thinking of our participants towards long-term thinking, developing their readiness to set meaningful long-term goals and follow those through. As well we expected the project to be an example of using a semi-tabboo-ed topic as a powerful example of education methodology based in exploring deeper values of cultures. The aim-objective framework of the project was as follows: A1 Aim: Develop planning and goal setting competences of young people through examining the inevitable end of life Objectives: O1 Create a safe atmosphere for sharing and discussing the sensitive topic O2 Share cultural experience, views and beliefs O3 Share personal views and ideas on the topic O4 Reflect on own mortality and make appropriate plans O5 Gain a deeper understanding on the topic through role-playing O6 Set goals and make long term plans O7 Check own ideas against people of longer life experience O8 Evaluate the experience, plan dissemination of result
