Out in the Open was a 3-phases training program that focused on improving the social inclusion and active participation of LGBT+ youth in society by improving the competencies of youth workers in outdoor education. The main aim was to empower and equip people who work with LGBTQIA+ youth, with new methods and approaches, based on outdoor methodology and experiential learning, on how to help their youngsters reach their emancipation and full potential. The drive for making this project an impactful reality, came from our acknowledgment and experience, that many youth workers and educators lack competencies on how to work effectively with the issues and needs of LGBTQIA+ youth and contribute to the creation of safe and inclusive environments. The main method that we chose to address this and foster the quality improvement in youth work and support the professional development and competencies of those active in youth work and education, was outdoors. It is a tool and a methodology, that brings people together, regardless of their background. Learning through outdoor experience is a powerful stimulus that places vulnerable youth in unique settings where they are often quite unsure of themselves. Moving out of the usual environment sometimes serves to reduce defensiveness, change relationships and build meaningful connections, moving beyond their comfort zones and facing their issues and fears, while they foster their physical and mental health, living a full-body experience. Our objectives were: - to involve directly in the 2 main activities 21 youth workers working with LGBT+ youth - to increase the competencies and boost the self-confidence of participants during each phase - to develop new methods and approaches connected to outdoors and the LGBT+ spectrum - to organize outdoor activities with schools in Latvia and introducing gender diversity during the Training Course - to organize at least 7 local activities in the participating countries during the Local Action Phase (1 activity per country) - to create and disseminate 1 toolkit during the Capacity Building Meeting with the new methods created and used - to measure and disseminate the impact of the methods used, organizing a Networking Conference Event in Riga - to evaluate the learning outcomes of participants through 21 youth passes, 21 reports for each activity
