Objectives

The objectives were as follows: 1. Promotion of European citizenship, the common values of freedom, tolerance and how to understand each other better to avoid discrimination; 2. Enhancing the quality of education centered around the topic of internationalisation and integrating it more thoroughly in the curriculum of subjects. 3. Looking at local issues to gather a better understanding of an ever-changing world such as the balance between traditions, the history linked to colonization, finding your identity as an adolescent and social inclusion. 4. Gathering more pedagogical approaches to teach 21st century skills, understanding of cross-cultural values, coaching, self-regulated learning, student-centeredness, ownership and an active learning process, and such, improving the students' (critical thinking) skills regarding these topics. Following the courses as teachers, their linguistic, cultural and international competences will be expanded. The teachers can promote intercultural dialogues through all forms of learning and support students through coaching. The focus on the European context was important.

Background

A new European Development Plan was written by the renewed school management in order to enlarge the understanding of European values, citizenship, tolerance, the values of freedom, cross-cultural values and the quality of education needed to be improved regarding those themes as well as internationalisation within the school. De Ring van Putten is a multicultural school with students and teachers coming from different backgrounds. Social inclusion was aimed for and it is important to create an understanding between people that we will respect and accept each other and learn from different backgrounds, traditions and values. Finally, the 21st century skills of teachers using it in the classroom and students applying the methodologies needed to be enhanced. By following teacher training courses, teachers will be educated to teach the students to be more motivated, bring more variety in the lessons, and implement internationalisation as a core component in their lessons in activities. Thus, internationalisation needed to be integrated more within the curriculum of OSG de Ring van Putten and its subjects. Good practices are shared with the other personnel and local issues such as balance between traditions and history are discussed.
