Project summary

Our strategic partnership entitled „Digital Orchestra” was created by four organizations from three different countries – Poland, Estonia and Italy. Three of our organizations are musical universities and the fourth one is an association. We want to create open-source educational resources which will be used during Orchestral Studies in the educational process of instrumental musicians. We plan to prepare a common list of fragments of musical pieces on which both the educational process and the future recruitment to orchestra spots are based. Pieces form this list we will than record using a virtual orchestra and on that canvas we will generate various versions in which parts of certain instruments will be muted. This way for example, a violinist preparing his part will be able to stop doubling recordings of the piece but rather download a fitting version of the piece from the on-line website and play his own part with the generated file in which only the part of the violin is muted. We believe that this new model for individual practice will greatly increase the effectiveness of the orchestral studies courses, which will allow to go through more material (more various pieces of music). Our tool will also be a valuable resource while looking for employment. It will allow for an increase in the percentage of success of students and graduates who used the tool during studies in recruitment processes for spots in orchestras and philharmonics. Due to the fact that both the material and the methodology of teaching orchestral studies in musical universities across Europe is very similar, we see enormous potential for implementing our tool in a wide range of institutions. That is why we found the form of the strategic partnership so appealing.

Objectives

This new model of individual work during practice significantly increased the effectiveness of classes within the course of orchestral studies, which allowed to study more material (various pieces). Our tool is also a valuable resource for students and graduates when preparing for the recruitment process when looking for a job. In the future, it will allow to increase the percentage of success in recruitment for potential jobs of students and graduates of orchestral studies, which were carried out using our tool. Due to the fact that the program and methodology of education in higher music schools in the course of orchestral studies throughout the European Union are very similar, and also use a similar database of works (classical music), we see great potential for a wide implementation of the tool that we have prepared. Therefore, the implementation of this project in the form of a strategic partnership seemed to us the most appropriate.

Background

The strategic partnership entitled "Digital Orchestra" consisted of four organizations from three countries - Poland, Estonia and Italy. Three of them are music universities and the fourth is an association. As part of our project, we wanted to create open educational resources that will be used during orchestral studies in the process of educating musicians-instrumentalists. We have prepared a common list of fragments of works on which both education and subsequent recruitment in the workplaces of these musicians are based. We then recorded fragments from this list using a virtual orchestra, and based on them we generated files in which the parts of a specific instrument are turned off. In this way, for example, a violinist preparing, either during his studies or before auditioning for an orchestra, to play his part in an ensemble no longer has to double the violin part from the recording, as it has been the case so far. Instead, he can download a ready-made file from a database prepared and made available on-line (digitalorchestra.eu) and play the practiced part of his instrument, hearing only all the others.
