The implementation of the "Safety first" project results from the needs of our school outposts. According to diagnoses carried out in schools, especially throughout the earlier project conducted by Polish and Spanish schools, we noticed the following problems among students aged between 10 and 12. Students have poor knowledge of the rules and techniques of first aid. They aren’t also aware of the threat to life and health. Furthermore, in case of an emergency they remain passive onlookers and they do not know what they should do. Besides, students often behave asocially and they aren’t willing to act selflessly. In addition they are not interested in first aid issues and they aren’t able to work as a team. During the KA1 project, school headmasters as well as Polish and Spanish teachers decided to achieve broader cooperation and proceed with the goals of the previous project by expanding our activities and involving students. They also decided to involve in the project other European Union schools which struggle with similar problems. Hence, the project "Safety first" will be carried out by Polish, Spanish, Greek and Italian schools. The most important goal of our project is to teach our younger students how to give first aid, instruct them to avoid danger and communicate in English in everyday life. We plan to familiarize students with proper first aid techniques in case of a life-threatening situations both at school and at home. We wish our students would be aware of the fact that quick response in an emergency is the most important factor. Thanks to the project, our students will know the techniques of first aid, they will be aware of their responsibility and, therefore, in case of a threat to life or health, they will not remain passive. We also intend, through our activities, to increase students' awareness of the threats and ways of avoiding them in everyday life. Students will improve their English language skills because the project will be held in English. Apart from practical skills, students will also develop social competences. We intend to implement our project by stimulating our students to tear away from social media and the virtual world. We want to teach our students communicating with other people in a clear and precise way in the real world. We intend to teach them how to work properly in a group where each member is responsible for his task. In addition, we plan to develop their creativity as well as sports and artistic talents. The international cooperation will raise the profile of the problem in the eyes of students so that all students of partner schools will be aware of the fact that the issue of first aid has an international dimension and they can shape the future of this world. The implementation of the project will take place primarily at our school facilities, while foreign mobilities will complete the activities at the school levels. Mobilities will be focused on training of students and teachers by professional instructors. What’s more, mobilities will allow to achieve the mutual understanding of partners and using all acquired skills in practice. In order to fulfill these tasks at the same time in partner schools, we will use the eTwinning platform. This platform will enable partners to present the effects of the conducted activities. In addition, it will provide easy and quick contact and allow to exchange of necessary information. The students who are chosen for the project will be divided into task groups. Each group will get a specific task, which will be carried out within many months under the supervision of the group's supervisor. The results of their work such as comics, instructional videos or field game will be updated on the eTwinning platform. It will be also presented during the summary of the project when we will organize the International First Aid Olympics for students from partner schools. Additionally, during the mobilities students will create a glossary of English words related to safety, hazards, accidents and first aid. We will share all the results of our activities on the websites of our schools and on the eTwinning platform. The specific nature of our project and measures provides for obtaining lasting tangible results. Students from each partner school will acquire specific knowledge and skills connected with first aid. They will also improve their English vocabulary in this field. During the implementation of the tasks, students will broaden their social competences. Due to the participation in the project students will become familiar with the work of emergency services, establish contacts, demonstrate commitment and creativity, broaden their knowledge and horizons, develop empathy and a sense of responsibility for their and others' safety. It will affect the intellectual and social development of students in the long run, even after the end of the project.
As part of the "Safety First" project, students of all schools involved, in accordance with the main goal, learnt about first aid in various health or life-threatening situations and learnt to communicate in English. They improved their social competences and sensitivity to the needs of others. They also got to know the services operating in the field of ensuring safety in each country: such as fire brigade, police, medical rescue, mountain rescue, water rescue, etc. Pupils and teachers carried out assigned tasks in their schools, such as pre-medical first aid classes, learning vocabulary related to hazards and first aid. Each school established cooperation with the services specific to their region or country. Under the supervision of their teachers, the pupils carried out the various tasks of the project, such as creating a project logo, making comic strips related to holiday safety, creating a glossary of safety-related phrases, learning about safe behavior at home, school and during leisure time, and learning how to administer first aid in the event of danger to life and health. They learnt about the rules of safe behaviour on the way to school. They made art works related to this issue and filmed short instructional videos related to safe behaviour. Teachers from the Polish school, created a song that speaks in simple terms about empathy and the importance of helping other people, and at the same time promoting our project and the Erasmus + programme. In addition, the students learned about the culture, traditions and art of the countries participating in the project. They prepared presentations related to dangers specific to each country and region, such as: earthquakes, fires, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes. Pupils had the opportunity to participate in various safety-related workshops. Together with their teachers, they created outdoor games dedicated to international integration in the broadest sense, as well as to the principles of safety and first aid. Various types of first aid activities took place in all schools, which could be used by all students of our schools, students' parents and the local community. As the COVID 19 outbreak broke out a few months after the project's inauguration, we had to revise our project implementation plans to the existing pandemic-related restrictions in each country. Although the pandemic did not facilitate the implementation of the project, this experience also related to security had a significant impact on the implementation of our project. We were forced to revise the original arrangements relating to the selection of the group of students who took part directly in the mobilities. However, this made the pace and quality of the tasks planned during the mobilities more efficient, as the pupils became very close to each other. Close relationships and even friendships were formed among both pupils and teachers. During the mobilities as planned, each host school endeavoured to provide very good safety conditions and the schedule of meetings was similar in all countries. Each meeting started with safety-related team-building activities, there were workshops led by qualified emergency services, and the pupils had the opportunity to learn about the customs of their host families' homes and about cultural and natural heritage. They created and participated in field games consolidating their knowledge and competences, which they used at the final meeting in Poland to sum up the project, at the International School First Aid Olympics. The results developed during the activities in schools and during the outgoing activities were presented on the e-Twinning platform. All the results of our activities are made available on the websites of our schools, on the e-Twinning platform, the Results Platform and on social media. Students of each partner school received specific knowledge and skills in first aid, and expanded their knowledge of English vocabulary in this field. In addition, during the implementation of the activities, the students broadened their social competences. Participation in the project allowed students to learn about the work of emergency services, establish lasting contacts, show commitment and creativity, and also developed a sense of responsibility for their own and others' safety, which ultimately influenced the intellectual and social development of students and their empathy. In each host country, there was also an opportunity to meet local authorities, which will allow in the future to apply for the next ERASMUS + projects.
