Objectives

Equality between women and men is a fundamental value of the European Union. “Making equality between women and men a reality for all Europeans and beyond” is the vision of the European Institute for Gender Equality. Taking this vision as the starting point, with an attentive and minimally critical eye, it is possible to rapidly realize how important it is to shed light on the conceptual difference between equality and equity. Gender inequity is a social and cultural phenomena in which people are discriminated due to their gender (men, women and non-binary people). Moreover, it is not an innocuous phenomena, given that its impact can be seen in different levels: political, social, familiar, economic and so forth. Also, several global studies show that in Europe the gap of gender equality is bigger than it should be. Thereby, we could fill up a long list of examples from the social sphere and, in each of them, the gender perspective (as well as many other intersectionalities) enables seeing the world from another point of view, though this change in perspective can provoke immense questioning and even some discomfort - a feeling with great catalytic potential to promote changes in the individual and, consequently, in the collective levels. A youth exchange is therefore a great opportunity to trigger changes, once it provides educational processes that engage young people into deepening the understanding of themselves, of their community and of the world we live in, hence supporting young people to proactively bring positive changes. As such it is a crucial element in promoting a real gender equity. From our experience in Erasmus +, there is a concern in guaranteeing gender equality but not equity (since equity is related to the different necessities of all types of gender diversity, binary and non-binary, and not to the representativeness in equal numbers of women and men). In this regard, the proposal of a specific YE to work on gender issues rises as a tool aimed at affecting young people who will be multipliers in the context of promoting gender equity. Therefore, this project, whose goals meets the objectives of Erasmus +, aims at: Raising awareness about the importance of gender equity in the different spheres of life in society; Challenging the participants to immerse into an experience to demystify the concept of gender and the influence of gender roles on our daily life as citizens; Supporting the participants in developing daily based practices, on individual and collective levels, towards more inclusive attitudes and to become promoters of gender equity on local, regional, national and international settings.
