Waves Of Change is about bringing together, ecology, local intervention, and interculturality. We aimed to bring young people from different countries together to deconstruct stereotypes and create opportunities for building together and not against each other, to create visibilibity for climate and ecological issues, more specifically the level of pollution and thus the urgency of promoting a change in behaviours and policies, to implement concrete, artistic, and collective actions as ways to efficiently raise young people's awareness of these topics. While working with youngsters in past projects, several of them voiced their concerns for ecological problematics and their interest in participating in projects related to this. This is why we as partner organisations decided it was time for us to come together for this project about interculturality and ecology through arts and outdoor activities.Waves of Change brought together, for 10 days in Costa da Caparica (Almada), youngsters from Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, Georgia, Ukraine, and Azerbaijan. Together, they worked on intercultural learning and ecology, with a specific focus on plastic pollution in the oceans. We used a combination of non-formal methodologies in order to promote exchanges inside the group and mutual learning: intercultural and linguistic animation, theatre of the oppressed adapted to an intercultural context, outdoor activities (camping and surf), and artistic creation, upcycling, beach cleaning. A central part of the project was the creation of a huge mural (3 meters high by 8 meters wide) representing a wave inspired by the works of Hokusai. This mural is the maquette of a 30-meter-long mural which will be painted on a wall close to Costa da Caparica's beach by the whole educational community of the council of Almada over the course of one year during the community art project called Boa Onda. Our "miniature", created through a collective participate process, is currently used during this whole process, the photos and videos of our project are being used by the CMA as a tool in the coordination of the project and to raise awareness on the relevance of intercultural projects funded by Erasmus+ inside the educational community of Almada. This way, the impact of our intercultural group's work is multiplied by traveling the whole council. This is an opportunity to spread our topic and project as well as giving an recognition to the youngsters. Indeed, our aim was not only to learn inside a bubble, but also to dialogue with the local territory. For this we created partnerships with the local authorities (Câmara Municipal de Almada via the educational department of Casa da Cerca) in order to work in a network of local organisations working with youth and/or climate and recycling: Centro de Monitorização e Interpretação Ambiental da Caparica, associação Ensaios e Diálogos, projeto Plásticos à Vista, Parque Nacional de Escotismo da Caparica...). Due to a change in administration, we were not able to make the partnership we intended with festival Sol Da Caparica but we were able to spend an evening at the festival and the group was able to witness the appalling reality of plastic waste during this festival who had refused to cooperate with us as they said their festival would be "zero plastic". The group was shocked by the vast amounts of disposable plastic which littered the area during and after the festival and it actually was a tremendous learning moment for the group and the team. By bringing together all these different elements, this project is at the junction between international and local interculturality, ecological topics, outdoor activities, and collective artistic creation. It developped the youngster's awareness that they can be transformative members of society, individually and as multipliers, thus promoting active, ecologically conscious citizenship. They also gained knowledge about the issue, a tremendous self-esteem boost, and expanded intercultural skills and knowledge about other cultures and their own. We also aimed to create a long-term dynamic between the different partners, namely the city council of Almada and the educational services of Casa da Cerca. We are currently working on building our partnership and creating a long-term intercultural vision of our common work.
