Objectives

Empowerful project was implemented to create a space for young people from various European countries and enhance their knowledge on current social issues. We organized workshops on such topics as: European values and human rights, equality, LGBT+, social justice, environment, and biggest challenges of the 21st century, youth activism and project planning as well as social media tools. The value of this project is that it gave a chance to young people to discuss the above-mentioned topics in international perspective, think about solutions that they could implement themselves as well as come up with solutions that can be implemented internationally. Moreover, the topics discussed during this project are rarely or in some countries not at all being discussed at schools, so that was another added value. During the youth exchange, the participants had a chance to work in smaller international teams, learn more about various countries and languages and get to know their peers from: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Poland, Germany, Sweden, Iceland and Estonia. The participants could exchange information on how specific social issues are being perceived and approached in various countries. Throughout the presentations, movies, and interactive workshops they were provided with evidence-based data on discussed topics. Through this the participants learned how to be open to other cultures, respect each other and as well to be active listeners. Throughout the project’s activities, young people were equipped with new skills or could train and increase those life skills that they already have. To strengthens the participants skills, we had workshops about tools for activism, usage of social media and project planning. The participants also had a chance to improve soft skills that are often not trained at schools, such as: ability to work in international teams, communication and management skills, ability to cooperate and be goal oriented, leadership skills, ability to hold public speeches, social competences, interpersonal skills and English skills. They got to know about different cultures, cuisines, and languages, especially about Sweden and Poland where the youth exchanges were taking place. Throughout those workshops the participants gained knowledge on such topics as: climate change in the world and its consequences, sustainable development and current global issues, importance of gender equality and equal societies, alcohol norm – situation in various European countries, activism in practice – how to respond to social problems, organize local actions and create projects, social media – how to promote our actions online. They could analyse social problems of the 21st century, get to know how the situation looks like in other countries, reflect on the solutions, and express their opinions. It helped realizing the nature of problems and defining own statements and approach towards the topics. To ensure the topics were relevant for young people we chose youths leaders that are a part of our target group. They were responsible for initially chosen topics and plan the projects workshops. During evaluations of respective activity, we asked the participants for ideas for future workshops, and implemented some of them in the next activity. We also had workshops where the participants themselves wrote problems about topics that are relevant in their lives and the context in which they live, and exchange thoughts and experiences with the other participants. We are certain that young people through participating in the international exchange became more aware of current social issues and were given time for reflection over those topics which can lead to becoming more active citizens. Ongoing through the whole project we used methods to build the relationships between the participants and enhance the knowledge of cultural differences. Methods used were for instance discussions, reflections groups, cultural evening, and group projects. During the exchange, the relationships between the participants strengthened through being part of various working group and solving various tasks related to the program. The exchange helped building a network between young people from various countries who might cooperate in the future. Thanks to the youth exchanges, they learned something new about other countries and cultures. They learned about the process of creating projects as tools that can be used for a project’s implementation. Thanks to the project five youth organizations from Europe decided to apply for a continuation of this project together, also involving some new Partners.
