Background

In recent years, our school has been faced with poor reading literacy and culture at all levels of schooling. This is reflected in the decline in the number of participants in the Reading Badge and in the poor results of reading literacy at the national exams. On the other hand, we have a very well-functioning sports activity, with high number of participating students and achievements at the national level. We are aware of the importance of both areas: sport and a healthy life as the basis for a happy individual and a successful society, reading competences as key to personal development, language confidence, (inter)cultural awareness, critical thinking. We decided to use modern didactic methods to effectively intertwine both areas: sports enthusiasm and reading lessons, cultural openness and sports. We wanted to explore various possibilities of combining reading and sports in the educational content. Cross-curricular integration of sports and art activities is poorly developed in Slovenia, so we wanted to get examples from abroad, develop the system at the school level and present it to the wider Slovenian professional public. At the same time, get to know institutions from abroad for further international cooperation.
