Project summary

The aim of the school project in the small district of Krupina is to strengthen the competence of pupils and language teachers in order to modernize and innovate the teaching of European languages at school. To motivate pupils, strengthen the behavioral skills of pupils, improve the communication skills. Participants of the project are pupils of the seventh, eighth and nineth grade of elementary schools from Slovakia, Sweden and Latvia and foreign language teachers. Ten pupils and four teachers (in case of Latvia two teachers) for each exchange from each school. There are three exchanges during two years. In the first year of the project pupils and teachers from Sweden and Latvia come to Slovakia, where they work on the topic "Let´s get to know each other". The main goal of this exchange is to set up the objectives with all involved pupils, to get the image of the activities and to energize the pupils for further activities. After this exchange active communication via etwinning portal starts, which is fixed part of the project. Between each exchange pupils and teachers work on different topics at language lessons to fulfil the tasks which are set up during the exchange. At the beginning of the second year pupils and teachers from Slovakia and Sweden come to Latvia and they work on the topic "Rural life". They work togehther at foreign language lessons at school (namely English, German and Russion) and outside of school, where they visit interesting places of rural life in the region of Gulbene. At the second half of the last year of the project participants from Slovakia and Latvia come to Sweden to work on theme "City life". Again they work togehther at foreign language lessons at school (namely English, German and Spanish) and outside of school, where they visit interesting places of city life in the region of Stockholm. After the last exchange participants work on comparison of rural and city life via etwinning portal. During two years of the project they create interesting materials like videos, booklets, a calendar of activities, recipes or dictionaries in English, Spanish, German and Russion language. The main goal of these activities is to motivate pupils in studying European languages and realize that speaking two foreign languages is necessary for becoming succesful citizen of European Union. Other important aspect of the project is to show pupils that travelling brings many experiences and help them to grow into self-confident residents of their towns, where they can prosper and work in the future. Pupils get experience in a multicultural area and tolerance towards people of other nations. Teachers improve their methodological skills and enrich lessons with new and interesting activities. At the same time they improve the management of children, improve the methodical, didactic, linguistic competence and broaden the horizons of international experience with other teachers, experience in a multicultural area, tolerance towards people of other nations. We believe that participation of our pupils and teachers in the exchange at the European level will contribute to increasing the quality of teaching in school and problems with the lack of interest of pupils, lack of motivation and poor behavior will resolve and convert to the positive attitude to learning by the pupils. The objective is the development of moral - conservative values in approach, skills development and possibly preparing for acceptation of pupils from migrant families from other countries too. Since the school places emphasis on sport and prepares future professional and elite sport persons, it urgently needs to strengthen and upgrade the education sector of all foreign languages in order to educate pupils - future sport persons to have language proficiency, to be able to communicate actively and boldly in European languages on international meetings and competitions. On the other hand strengthened approach of teachers to pupils will improve behavior, motivation and concentration at lessons, but it also will lead pupils to their personal development, increase persistence in sports, resulting in the pupil, who communicates in European languages, he/she is persistent, tenatious, purposeful and achieves good results in sports performance as well as in other subjects. He/she is a successful pupil, ready to become a prospective EU citizen, who will represent Slovakia responsibly and promissingly.

Final report summary

The goal of the school project in the small district of Krupina was to strengthen the competencies of students and language teachers in order to modernize and innovate the teaching of European languages at school. Motivate pupils, strengthen pupils' behavioral skills, and improve communication skills. The participants of the project were pupils of the seventh, eighth and ninth grades of primary schools from Slovakia, Sweden, and Latvia and teachers of foreign languages during the first mobility, which took place just before the outbreak of the pandemic in February 2020. Ten pupils and four teachers from each school participated in this exchange (in the case of Latvia, two teachers). Three exchanges were implemented during the project. In the first year of the project, pupils and teachers from Sweden and Latvia came to Slovakia, where they worked on the topic "Let's get to know each other". The main goal of this exchange was to set goals with all the students involved, to get an overview of the activities, and to motivate the students for further activities. After this exchange, active communication started through the etwinning portal. Between individual exchange stays, students and teachers worked on different topics in language classes to fulfill the tasks they set during the exchange. After visiting Slovakia, the Covid 19 pandemic broke out and changed plans. The Swedish partner withdrew from the project, we requested a change so that the project could continue bilaterally. Subsequently, we also asked for an extension of the project. We had a planned visit to Latvia in September 2021, which was canceled 3 days before departure due to the worsening pandemic situation. In May 2022, we implemented the second mobility, which was a replacement for the mobility in Sweden, called Urban life through the eyes of pupils. The goal of this mobility was to show students life in a big city, its advantages and disadvantages compared to life in small towns where the mobility participants came from. They visited European institutions, were part of Europe Day, and also met the ambassador working at the Permanent Representation of the Slovak Republic in Brussels. In June 2022, we visited a partner school in the city of Gulbene in Latvia, whose theme was Rural life through the eyes of pupils. They visited rural places in the east of Latvia and worked together on foreign language lessons at school and outside of school. During the last exchange, the participants compared life in the countryside and in the city and created posters and PowerPoint presentations. During the project, they created interesting materials such as videos, brochures, an activity calendar, recipes, and dictionaries in English, Spanish, German, and Russian. The main goal of these activities was to motivate students to study European languages and to realize that mastering two foreign languages is essential to become successful citizens of the European Union. Another important aspect of the project was to show the students that traveling brings a lot of experiences and helped them grow into confident residents of cities where they can prosper and work in the future. Pupils gained experience in the multicultural area and tolerance towards people of other nations. The teachers improved their methodical skills and enriched the lessons with new and interesting activities. At the same time, they improved the management of children, improved methodical, didactic, and language competence, and expanded the horizons of international experience with other teachers, experience in the multicultural area, and tolerance towards people of other nations. For several teachers, it was the first experience participating in foreign mobility within the Erasmus+ program. The participation of our pupils and teachers in the exchange at the European level has contributed to the improvement of the quality of teaching in the school and the problems of lack of interest of pupils, lack of motivation to learn foreign languages have improved and in some cases turned into a positive attitude. Since the school emphasized sports and prepared future professional and top athletes, it urgently needs to strengthen and improve the educational sector of all foreign languages in order to educate students - future athletes on language skills and to actively communicate in European languages at international meetings and competitions. On the other hand, the strengthened approach of teachers to pupils improved their behavior, motivation, and concentration in lessons, also led pupils to their personal development, and increased endurance in sports, as a result of which a pupil who communicates in European languages will also be persistent, tenacious, goal-oriented and achieves good results in sports performance and in other subjects. He is a successful student, ready to become a promising EU citizen who will represent Slovakia responsibly and promisingly.
