Objectives

The project „volunteering for sustainabilty“ intends to increase the quality and quantity of volunteering activities for young adults in ecovillages and other sustainability projects, offering the volunteers a rich learning opportunity about all four dimensions of sustainability (ecological, social, economical and cultural), promoting active citizenship as well as values like tolerance, solidarity, inclusion of diversity and respect. The project consists of a training for youth workers enabling the participants and participating organisations to carry out successful international volunteering activities for youth of high quality, including through the European Solidarity Corps. All partners in this project work in the field of education for sustainable development and are connected to the ecovillage and permaculture movements. An ecovillage is an intentional or traditional community that is consciously designed through locally owned, participatory processes to regenerate social and natural environments. The four dimensions of sustainability (ecology, economy, the social and the cultural) are all integrated into a holistic approach. Ecovillages act as models for sustainable development and serve as training and learning centres where people learn not only through non-formal education courses and workshops offered, but most importantly through the immersion experience of sharing ecovillage life for the duration of their stay (informal learning). Permaculture projects are based on the Permaculture design methods and structure, ethics and principles of creating and maintaining the living space and life in general mimicking the sustainable example of Nature itself. While the project partners engage mostly in non-formal education, a lot of informal learning takes place as well through the immersion experience of being in a place that practices a sustainable lifestyle on a daily basis in as many areas of life as possible. In recent years, EVS has become more and more widespread among ecovillages and permaculture centres all over Europe, with many very successful projects already completed. Today, these organisations are eager to work with the European Solidarity Corps that has replaced the EVS. There is a strong interest among young people in sustainability issues in general and to visit ecovillages and learn about their sustainable way of life. The ecovillages represented by the partner organisations want to respond to that by offering more opportunities to young people to come and live with them for a while as volunteers. The same is true for different types of sustainability projects. The overall objective of this project is to INCREASE QUALITY AND QUANTITY OF INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERING ACTIVITIES FOR YOUTH in the participating ecovillages and sustainability organisations. The partners wish to upgrade their volunteering activities in various ways: - volunteers stay long-term instead of short-term, for instance for a full year; - host more volunteers at a given time; - engage in volunteering schemes that require more commitment from both the organisations invoved as well as from the volunteers, e.g. move from WWOOFing to ESC; - go from national to international volunteering.
