Objectives

The CFA organised the Global Peace Games (GPGs) with partners: The Peace Village, GroepINTRO and INEX. The GPGs continues to make a significant contribution to The United Nations’ annual International Day of Peace. The GPGs was facilitated at The Peace Village, Flanders Field, Mesen, Belgium, site of the First World War 1914 Christmas Truces where Allied and German soldiers, took part in humanitarian acts during unofficial truces. The unique tranquil historic environment inspired young people to be empowered when they undertook the role of Ambassadors for Peace. The purpose of the GPGs was to bring young people together from challenging back grounds and give them access to new experiences through a programme of non-formal, cross curricular activities that helped them gain key competences. Namely, Peace Education Through Play, A Cultural Awareness in Foreign Languages and in their mother tongue and the development of Social and Civic competences. Social skills focused on, participants exploring for the first-time topical themes: identity, reconciliation, intervention, issues in bullying, gang violence, conflict resolution, de-radicalization, mindfulness and a common understanding of humanity. In addition, digital skills helped develope interpersonal, intercultural and social awareness and civic responsibilities. GPGs wanted to achieve bringing as many cultures, mixed ability and mixed gender young people together, to create peace-makers for the future. We wanted to do this through social and physical activities. Young people would return home confident in their new found abilities to share their GPGs experiences with their families, schools and communities. Consequently, inspiring others to help organise peace games and twin their designated area of play with Flanders Peace Field. Overall, the unique environment aided the objectives; the participants’ needs were considered early into the project. The project partners recognised that many of the participants were from urban communities. For many of the participants the GPGs was their first ever experience of the countryside. The Flanders location, steeped in history, lent itself to a shared intimacy of learning which many of the participants had never experienced before.
