Objectives

AAARGH!! is an international cultural exchange taking place in Yerevan/Armenia and London/UK. Young prople from the UK, Armenia, Turkey, Georgia and Italy will meet to explore through art and creativity ways to build more peaceful countries and societies and to say no to conflicts, radicalism and violence. They will discuss cultural differences, regional traditions, stereotypes, and current European and global issues like the refugee crisis and Brexit; they will confront each other and brainstorm on the reasons and consequences of radicalisation in different cultural contexts and will try to develop strategies to fight it through creativity. Participants will then be invited to use this knowledge to spread awareness in their own countries of origin. During 10 days, youths from 5 countries will work together on small scale art projects focused on different views on peace as a general motive. Participants will use digital drawing, video, photography, creative writing, music, panel painting, theater, dance, performance and transmedia storytelling to find their own ways to express attitudes and opinions towards peace and conflict resolution. At the same time, the young participants will be invited to reflect on the causes and consequences of radicalisation, and to imagine together new ways to face its threats and prevent its diffusion. At the end of the exchange artworks will be showcased through a public event that will give the participants opportunity to share common or opposing ideas on peace and tolerance, conflict and radicalisation in different cultural and socio-economic contexts. Using their talents, skills and creativity, participants will find common points between Europe and the Caucasus. The first stage of the event will be organized in Yerevan, and local youth and the general public will be invited to attend. The second stage will be set in London: this will give disadvantaged young people with social and economic obstacles from partner countries the opportunity to work on the project in a totally different, international environment. Participants will be invited to compare Yerevan, London and their home countries, and to think about differencies and similarities in the phenomenon of radicalisation in the context of such different cultures and environments. They will have the opportunity to see how conflicts, radicalism and violence manifest in Yerevan and London, but they will also be able to discuss together cultural differences, regional traditions, stereotypes, and to imagine new ways to build a future, more peaceful environment. Our aim is to promote peace, spread awareness about its importance and the ways to protect it from conflict and radicalisation; to spread mutual understanding and dialogue, and to do it trough the artistic expression of cultural, religious, ethnic diversity; to involve young people from different countries as protagonists of the discussion, empowering them to think about today's issues as something they can try and find solutions to through peaceful intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding, instead of violence. The Youth exchange will help young people to see how much their engagement and determination to develop their own interests and creativity is actually beneficial to themselves and to the communities the live in. The project aims to raise the confidence of young people from deprived areas, showing them the personal and social rewards of civic engagement. Goals of Art for Peace are: 1. To foster cross-cultural learning and dialogue between the participants from different/conflict countries, with a focus on mutual understanding and peaceful interaction as well as creating dialogue between civic society representatives, institution, local communities; 2. To increase young people's knowledge about partner countries, their cultures/history/religions, and the ways to relate to them and establish a dialogue with them in a positive and respectful way that doesn't spur conflict; 3. To develop creativity and the involvement of young people in civic life trough artistic expression; 4. To unite young people from different backgrounds, conflict nations and cultures; 5. To let young people learn how to respect each opinion and break stereotypes by conducting peaceful discussions, brainstorming sessions, debates with their peers from other countries; 6. To promote good neighbourly relations between institutions, civic society organisations, citizens from EU and non EU countries, and to provide space for the building of new friendships and collaborations and trough art and culture.
